Namaste,

Has anyone given thought to Dhritarashtra's 100 son's?
I have thought about this and have researched it a bit, but have yet to understand the significance of 100 sons, let alone how they came to being. Why not 108 or 23, or 99?
what is the message Vaysaya-ji is telling us?

Can any one add insight to this?

The 100 sons

We already discussed that the eldest son of the blind son Drita-rashtra is Dur-yodhana, who symbolize the Ego. To the blind king who symbolize the blind mind marries Gandhari. She out of emotionally love to her blind husband, ties a bandage on her eyes. Thus Gandhari symbolize the blind intellect following the blind mind. This blind mind and blind intellect breeds many desires through ten sense organs. Five are senses of knowledge or perception the eyes, nose, ears, tongue and skin (Gnanendriyas). The other five are the senses of action-mouth, hands, feet, genital organ and anus (Karmendriyas). There are 10 directions north, south, west, east, north east, south east, south west and northwest and up and down.

When the mind and intellect run blindly in all 10 directions and functions through 10 sense organs , give rise to hundred (10 x 10 = 100) propensities, desires, thoughts, ambitions, expectations and dreams. These are the children of the mind and symbolized as the 100 sons in Mahabharata. The eldest of these thought is Dur-yodhana which means the one whom it is difficult to fight. "Duh" means difficulty, "yodh" means to fight and represents the Ego , which is difficult to fight or indomitable. The second son and brother to Dur-yodha is Dus-asana , the name means one who is difficult to control.

The discussion continues with the symbolism of Pandavas...

Dritarashtra and Gandhari, and the children themselves, should have had a phenomenal memory to remember all the hundred names and recongnize each one by name! Now, could there be a significance to each name to symbolize a desire/thought/dream/propensity?!

"A very unusual conclusion drawn by Dr B.G. Matapurkar of Maulana Azad Medical College has been cited in the book when he says that the birth of 100 sons to Gandhari was through today’s technique of reproduction through in-vitro fertilisation."

This is perhaps the meaning of the shloka in Mahabharata that states:

"Later, Dridharashtra's wife Gandhari gave birth to a lump of flesh which Vyasa cut into 100 pieces and kept each one in a pot. At the appropriate time, each piece was born as a son and thus a 100 sons were born to Gandhari. (Mahabharata, Aadhiparvam, chapter 114, sloka 17)." -- (http://www.chennaionline.com/columns/Lifehistory/history37.asp)

Namaste Animesh,
thank you for this... can you continue?
Can you advise the role or symbol of Dhritarashtra the blind king? and perhaps Drona, Bishma, Draupiti. And your take on the 5 Pandava?
What symbols do they take on in this great story?

We know they are they [ the pandava] are sons of Vayu, and Dharma, etc. Yet we also know they at one time were Indras themselves that were brought to earth ( found in Adi Parva Section). If you possess this information , it would be great to outline/discuss.

Namaste Yajvanji et al,
the following videos on Youtube would be a great source on the significance of the Mahabharata war in relation to our own quest for enlightenment. The talk is by Paramahamsa Nithyananda and frankly it was thrilling and ecstatic just to watch his wonderful views(though I do not know how original). They are quiet long and I was unable to get off my seat ! Please sit through them.

Namaste Nachiketa,
yes, I had the privilage of listening to Nithyananda-ji and other subject matter he offers on Youtube.
He does a wonderful job in his disucssions...also on the discussion of his samadhi... a video all , if they care to listen, may find valuable.

I would hope he would get to the other Mahabharata characters...
I am knee deep reading the whole offering from Vyasa muni and Nithyananda-ji brings more value for the reading.

Thank you for this , and I keep watching his videos and insights.

pranams.
