Tomorrow is Amavasya, Friday, Hanumath Jayanthi (birthday of Shri Hanuman) and Koodarai-valli (http://www.tamilbrahmins.com/rituals-ceremonies-pujas/3637-koodaraivalli.html) festival day.

Happy Hanumath Jayanthi! Making 'Pepper vada (http://chefinyou.com/2010/03/milagu-vadai-recipe/) garland' (typically 108 or atleast 51) and offering it to Shri Hanuman at the temple is practiced on this day to earn the blessings of Maruthi!

For Koodaraivalli, sweet pongal called 'Sarkarai Pongal' (http://www.pongalfestival.org/sweet-pongal-recipe.html) is the special menu! It is offered to Goddess Andal, an amsa of Bhooma-devi, the goddess of Earth!

Namaste.

Thanks for the heads up. The recipe looks easy and sounds delicious. Alack and alas! I won't be home to try it, and there is nothing on the temple calendar indicating a puja for Hanumath Jayanthi (not that I could go anyway). I'll have to think up something else to honor Him.

Trivia: here in NJ Amavasya ends at 14:45 on Friday. The temple always does pujas before Purnima or Amavasya end, so sometimes it's the night before.

I think most temples in US that have Hanuman shrine, will accept around $25.00 for decorating Maruthi with the homemade Vada garland.

Oops! I didn't check at our local temple when they are going to celebrate! Thanks, I still have time! Anyways, I'll make vada and offer it to Hanuman in the morning tomorrow!

Namaste all,

I'm going to a Hanuman (or Hanumath, I'm not sure why this different spelling is there, please elaborate) puja tonight at my local temple. If there are pictures I'll be sure to post them later! :)

Sure, that would be great! :)

I think 'Hanumath' means 'That of Hanuman', 'Hanuman's'.
