Thiruvallikeni is my home as well. I have crawled, sat , stood and ran for hours in that temple since I was a baby. I know every inch of that temple, every brick in the wall, so to speak. I plan to come back to this place at Sri Parthasarathy's feet by 2017 at the latest.

My family are the ones responsible for the beautiful flowers and garlands adorning Bhagavan and his consorts. My grandmother threads each garland every day with loving care. Through her, I know all the preists and other devotees working in the temple quite well. They always give me extra prasadam when they see me!

Uniqueness of Thiruvallikeni:

1) Contains 6 divya desams in one - Sri Pathasarathy (Tirumala), Sri Narasimha (Ahobilam), Sri Andal (Srivilliputhur), Sri Rama (Ayodhya), Sri Gajendra Varada (Kanchi) and Sri Ranganatha (Srirangam) are present here.

2) All Sri Vaishnava pUrvAchAryAs are present here except for Swami Periyavachan Pillai. My life's ambition is to ensure this acharyan is also present to shower us with his kaTaksham someday.

3) There is a sizeable mAdhva population with a madhva managed sannadhi for Hanuman here. So, two great vaishnava traditions live in harmony here. I know many knowledgeable madhvas from Thiruvallikeni myself.

4) There are 5 hanuman sannidhis here. One main Anjaneya temple plus one sannidhi in front of Sri Rama, one at the feet of Sri Rama and two madhva managed hanuman sannidhis (one near the temple tank, one inside the temple).

5) In Sri Ranganatha Sannidhi, Sri Ugra Narasimha and Sri Varaha are present. Similarly, Sri Sudarshana is present behind Sri Narasimha. Unless specifically asked for, we cannot see them. The residents take simple pride in knowing these little secrets of the temple.

6) Because of all these sannidhis plus the presence of Vedavalli Thayar, the consort of Ranganatha, there is always some sort of a festival going on everyday.

7) Sri Vaishnava and Madhva mutts present all around the temple give the whole area an auspicious atmosphere.

8) The children have done prathishtai for their own parthasarathy perumal and he appears with the real perumal on brahmOtsavams.

9) Daily Vishnu Sahasranama pArAyaNam in the Anjaneya sannidhi in the evenings and regular temple visits by scholars to give discourses increase the bliss of this divya desam.

Thruvallikeni is a separate world. If you are a vaishnava and haven't spend a day atleast there yet, you must definitely do so.

I visited Sri Parthasarathy Temple in Triplicane years ago. I remember the Lord having a moustache. I don't remember the other details mentioned. I'll keep those in mind next time I get to go.

Sri Vaishnava,

That is wonderful information. Thanks for posting it.

I remember an elderly grandma in my relation who used to observe fast every Ekadasi day and go to Parthasarathy Perumal temple on Dwadasi early morning with homemade Kesari for the deity for naivedyam. Even at age 70+ she used to do 108 namaskars before the deity before she broke the fast.

Although I am from TN, I've never been to Parthasarathy temple (only once when I was little). For that matter, I've never been to majority of temples in Chennai although I've been to temples in other parts of TN (and some in Kerala too) predominantly. Would be great if I'm blessed with a trip to Sri Parthasarathy temple on my next visit to Chennai.

I was not aware that Triplicane Parthasarathy temple was considered 6 divya-desams in one.

By the way, does anyone know the story of why Parthasarathy has a moustache? :-)

One more point I forgot to mention is that this is one of the rare kshetrams where you can see both Krishna and Rama with their families.

Venkatakrishnan is also known as mAnushya vAsudeva, and is present along with Rukmini, Balarama, Pradyumna, Aniruddha and Satyaki. All 4 vyuhas. Similarly, Sri Rama is present with Sita, Lakshmana, Bharata, Shatrughna and Hanuman.

The reason for having a moustache is basically because he is a kshatriyan, but I can provide a reason that seems to be coherent with the shastras.

The Chandogya Upanishad states that the Being in the Sun has two lotus eyed and is present with a moustache. This is Sriman Narayana.

In the Mahabharata, we learn that Bhishmacharya was a Madhu Vidya UpAsakA. In this Brahma Vidya, Vishnu is meditated as 'honey' (ie, of an exceedingly sweet nature and qualities that seem newer and newer each time) dwelling in the Sun. The phalan of this Vidya: 1) Status of Vasus and Rudras and 2) Moksha after attaining said status of vasus and rudras. Brahmacharya is an accessory for this vidya.

Bhishma in his previous birth, was a Vasu who was practicising this Vidya for moksha. But due to a curse by Vashishta, he was born as a human. And becoming involved in familial matters and developing attachment for his relations, he lost his skill in upAsaNa (Note: he became a Brahmacharya due to his vow which shows that this vidya yields its fruit somehow in someway).

The reason for his loss of concentration was because he had eaten food at Duryodhana's house for a long time, and the food offered by a tamasic person always carries tamasic vAsanas.

So, in the war, Krishna ensured that Arjuna pierced Bhishma with so many arrows that it drained his blood. And in doing so, the tamasic food, mixed with the blood, was fully removed. Bhishma attained clarity of mind and was able to continue his upAsaNa.

Bhishma says it was due to Krishna's anugraham that he re-attained his vairagyam and was able to continue his upAsaNa. He further adds that now he is able to meditate on Krishna constantly. In the Sahasranama, he begins with 'bhaktyA purusham avyaya', where bhaktya refers to upAsaNa and avyaya refers to 'one whose qualities seem newer and newer with each passing moment', which is a precise description of Madhu, the Brahman within the Sun!

So, the long story of the moustache is this - Bhishma has identified Madhu with Krishna, and the Upanishad declares that this Madhu has a moustache! And he also has a mark on his chin that shows he is the same as Srinivasa of Thirumala; for the history of that mark refer to Sri Anantarya charitra from TTD websites.

Parthasarathy’s moustache

Namaste Philosoraptor

I did some research, and this is some of the information I found. This ancient temple in Chennai is dedicated to Parathasarthy from which Partha denotes Arjuna and Sarathy denotes the “charioteer of”. Thus it is to Krishna, it is said at Lord Venkateshwara appeared before King Sumathi as this Charioteer because the King had made a wishful prayer that Lord Venkateshwara could be worshipped as Krishna (thus "Venkatakrishnan").

It is said that per tradition, a Charioteer keeps a moustache, and thus in this form as the Charioteer the moustache is seen as per tradition. It is also said the Lord in this case has a face full of scars due to the arrows of the Kauravas in the Kurushetra War (arrows of Bheeshmar).

There is an interesting side note about this temple. Mahakavi Subramania Bharathiyar is known as one of India’s greatest poets, and he was struck by an elephant at the Parathasarthy Temple, and though he did not die at that moment, his health then deteriorated and he died on 11 September 1921 at 40 years of age.
