Friends,
:) Did not know where to place this ... I know its a general spiritual qualification but I would quote from advaita works, mostly. Thus thought of posting some simple verses on Vairagya , Dispassion or Detachment.

Total disenchantment with the world is a sign of wisdom. When we see how transient this world is and enquire into it we clearly tend to appreciate the simple observations! these are simple quotes from various works :

I start with vairagya satakam:

भोगा न भुक्ता वयमेव भुक्ता
स्तपो न तप्तँ वयमेव तप्ताः।
कालो न यातो वयमेव याता
स्तृष्णा न जीर्णा वयमेव जीर्णाः॥

we think we are enjoying, while we are being enjoyed upon
though no religious austerities are performed, we are being scorched
the time is not moving, we ourselves are moving away.
the longing for pleasures is not aging though we ourselves age!! --> vairagya satakam

Love!

इदँ काष्ठँ इदम् काष्ठँ नध्यँ वहतिसँगतः।

सँयोगाक्ष्च वियोगाक्ष्च का तत्र परिदेवना॥

This and that corpse are flowing together in a river.

They remai n together for some time and then separate, what is thre to brood over this?

Dongre Maharaj's definition of VairAgya :

VairAgya (Hindi) : Upabhog ke liye padArtha upalabdha honepar bhi unke prati Akarshit na honA.

Not being attracted to things despite their being easily available and accessible for consumption.

( - from the famous compilation of Dongre Maharaj's discources (talk, lectures, kathA saptAha) on Shrimad BhAgavat mahApurAN, originally in GujarAthi, translations in Hindi, Marathi, and now out of print).

Namasthe.
Vairagya is experienced when there is Anuraga towards Divine which shifts the mind and heart away from sensory pleasures. So Bhakti can only lead to Vairgya..?
What do you think..?

Bhakti is the mother of Jnanam and Vairagyam. Remember the Srimad Bhagavatha Mahaatmyam Khandam from Padma Purana?
