Chanting or Singing?

Dandavats Everyone,

I have a question, why do we sometimes Sing the Mahamantra and sometimes we Chant the mahmantra

Namaste Ji,

Chanting or Singing any mantra is only possible for those who can talk.

For those who are not able to hear and talk(hearing and speech challenged individuals) how are they going to chant any mantra?

Sometimes I feel religion caters for the able bodied but the disabled are often not taken into consideration in the quest for spirituality.

A person who cant speak and hear should be able to chant mentally if he had learn to read and write.

A person who is visually challenged has the option to sing and chant and also recite mentally.

A person who is normal can sing or chant or recite mentally.

So the common factor here is mental recitation..that is everyone regardless of capability..whether normal...visually challenged ..hearing and speech challenged should be able to do a mental recitation.

May be that is why a mental recitation of any mantra is deemed the best way to recite because everyone and anyone can do it.

As for those deprived of hearing, vision or speech, sky is the limit for them as far as bhajan is concerned, since it is all about the heart and the AtmA within, and they are already turned inwards and not outwards. We have Surdasji who would rather stay with the full vision inwards though outwardly blind ; rather that going outward and having sight yet blind to the One inside.

Vannakkam: Another way to look at it is that chanting the mantra is the mantra and its use, whereas singing it is a song in praise of the mantra. For example, Aum Namashivaya, this happens a lot. Almost everything you hear is singing.

chanting is done without any background music. In chanting mantra one does not change the pattern of pitch, raise your tone, etc. Chanting is continuous i.e. mantra -- silence -- mantra. When mind melts into the source or even if it is attracted towards the source of mantra, then it calms down, thoughts vanish. You need a calm mind to enter into this meditative state.

Singing makes one 'ready' by pushing all worldly thoughts. Hence even in advaita discourses, bhajans are sung in the beginning. It is said that half job is done while singing. Kundalini rises to heart chakra giving first glimpse of divinity. If singer is powerful, spiritually developed, one can experience transformation of entire vibration of that area and one can feel transformed. Singing though can be done individually, it is mostly done in group, while in chanting initially it is advised to do in groups, but later on we are told to chant (japa) in isolation.

Chant or sing, the purpose is to create the vibration to arrest all the outer world and wake up the inner one. The serpentile power starts swaying with the vibration, starts moving upward.

It is upto the sadhaka's nature and liking and what suits him most. His purity of concentration will tell him all. Chant or sing, the question is where the mind is.

If only chanting, it greatly helps to do it in the continuous presence of sound of conch shell or church bell or temple gong... any sound that resembles "Aaauumm". It is the vibration of AUM sound that does the wonders.
