Sangh Parivar activists have attacked an art student at Vadodara for an allegedly obscene painting. After physically assaulting the student and vandalising an exhibition at which his paintings were displayed, they got the police to take him into custody. As despicable as the intolerance of the Parivar’s activists is the acquiescence of the police in their vandalism and the abject surrender of the authorities of the Maharaja Sayajirao University to their diktats. Instead of arresting the activists for disrupting the peace in the university, the police threw the student in jail and the University’s Vice-Chancellor ordered the suspension of the dean of the fine arts school for coming out in support of the student. The attack on the art student at Vadodara is not an isolated incident. There have been scores of incidents where painters, film makers and writers have been intimidated or attacked by right-wing elements claiming to be acting in defence of Indian culture and the Hindu religion. But these self-appointed guardians of Hinduism have little understanding either of art or of the essence of Hinduism.
