Before Christianity conquered Europe and eradicated all custom of the so called heathen winter solstice was a very important day.

At 11.44 MEZ the sun started to return back. This night was the longest, today is the shortest day of the year, the days now become longer as following – on December 26th the step of a mosquito, on January 1st the step of a cock, on January 6th the jump of a deer, on February 2nd one hour and so on.

On winter solstice people ignited lights to welcome Helios, to show Him the way back home (Ignis is Agni, Helios is Surya). They offered naivedyam to nourish Him for the long journey.

What left of this custom are electric lights on the Christmas tree and gifts from humans to humans. Helios and the cosmic wonder are forgotten.

The Christians established the birth of Jesus around this festival to dissuade the heathen from their belief and custom.

Before Christianity Europe was not different from India, divinity was seen in everything and everywhere. All Indian Gods are found in European pantheons accordingly, mythology is the same.

Namaste, Gód Jól (Good Yule) and Shubha Panchaganapati.

That is all very true, and is being revived in Ásatrú, the modern reconstruction and revival of the ancient Norse (and other Germanic cultures) religion.

There are 12 days celebrated for Yule. Each one is dedicated to god/dess or concept. The equivalent of a puja is performed each night. The first night is dedicated to mothers and all female ancestors. It's called Mother's Night, accordingly. All women and female ancestors were highly regarded and revered in Germanic culture.

Thank you for the link Jainarayan, yes there are some groups who try to bring back lost custom.

But there is also another funny development. Christians try to get Jesus connected to the Asian culture, since more and more people discover Hinduism and Buddhism. So many Swamis, Bhikkus, Lamas and Roshis appear, give lectures and inspire people to found communities and even small monasteries.

Christians get alerted. They equalize Krishna with Christ, announce that Jesus died in India, show him sitting in Padmasana – as Buddha in golden, as Swami in orange attire. More and more they avoid to show him hänging on the cross.

Since you find more Bhagavad Gitas than Bibles in bookshops they announce that Bhagavad Gita says the same as Bible – but it can only be the other way round Bible may say the same as Bhagavad Gita. If you point to this fact … run as fast as you can.

To get to the roots of pre christian Europe is very difficult, especially when there are no written records apart from some historical notes from the Romans, and I cant see that as being devoid of any bias. How they are slowly reconstructing this knowledge is developing and soon enough it will emerge with more clarity, lets face it, it was an almost total massacre of an ancient civilization.

While the symbology is different and many in the past have given grosser accounts of the ancient European cosmology, like portals to others worlds, underground worlds where we go with our normal present physical body, when the understanding in the Dharma traditions have been better preserved know it as travelling via means of Mind/ meditation consciousness , more subtle means.

They are not a million miles away from each other and keep some synthesis with their own identities mutually intact. Humans naturally share the same experience, in ancient times when it was more prominent and probably more normal to be spiritually advanced just as a natural course of being human, nothing special just normal, and a normal human being is by nature a divine experience, even if there is some purification. Now its seen as alternative, or trendy or it needs some awakening from a polluted socially conditioned and manipulated world. India and wider Asia is so fortunate to still exist in a world where information can be shared because certain practices and record have been preserved, it still exists even if damaged as a living tradition.
