I've been studying the Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita. Are those sufficient for a basic understanding? Any other recommendations?

Yes, absolutely...

One of the best is the Bhagavatam, or Bhagavat Purana. This tells the whole story of Sri Krishna as well as countless other stories of Dharma in 12 Cantos.. it's really unparalelled and teaches the whole of Sanatan Dharma and Bhakti. Srimad Bhagavatam is complete, and alone it is enough.

Each text is fully sufficient due to the source of the texts coming from a non dual consciousness. Where the texts begins may vary according to the level of consciousness but each teaching divided into sub potency carries the same message in revealing and uniting individual consciousness and its parts to that one non dual consciousness which is whole and of the same nature.

Bhagavad Gita which is the essence or the condensed essence of the Upanishads is often known as complete vedanta, vedanta meaning the end of knowledge, so there is nothing lacking in any of the Upanishads and Bhagavad Gita or any valid shastra or written text, some may just have a personal preference, so please do not think that the Upanishads and Bhagavad Gita are lacking anything, they are start middle and end. Within each of the texts many slokas are complete, even few syllables, such is the depth.

Most of the Upanishads verses are considered as mantras, mantra means the vibration of shaki which reveals and carries shiva or pure consciousness, only religious mundane faith, bias and false intellect can divide and say one is higher than other.

Sri Mahaganapataye Namah
Sri Sarasvatyai Namah
Sri Padavallabha
Narasimha Sarasvati
Sri Guru Dattayreyaya Namah

Besides these, there are some which are wonderful as Datta Stavam, Sri Guru Gita...

Also I recommend the Shata Sloki Ramayana.

Shata Sloki Ramayana (https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://dattavani.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/SSR-on-etv.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwihztbZ7fbmAhWIKs0KHaMACtgQFjAAegQIAxAB&usg=AOvVaw2cVdwzeVUWxXM19MO8lcTq)

(This is a link to the PDF from Dattavani.org).

The Shata Sloki Ramayana is also good for learning some Sanskrit.

Sri Swamiji recommends Sri Vishnu Sahasranama very often. And Sri Lalitha Trishati Stotram.

Sri Lalita Trishati Stotram is 300 names of Mother Goddess.

Besides these, bhajans are also a good source.

Wisdom and jnana are both within them, and it is also poetic and beautiful.
