Namaste,
I thought to make this a seperate post , and try to minimize any confusion.
This post is the continuation of http://www.hindudharmaforums.com/showpost.php?p=13124&postcount=1

The Arudha - this post
The Upapada - this post
Upagraha's - future post
I would like to add this one...why are not Uranus, Neptune and Pluto part of the compendium of graha's ? this needs to be answered ...I will take a stab at this in a later post.

Lets now address Upapada. We now know what the Arudha ( reflection) means from the previous posts. We can take a look at the Upapada.

The upapada is the arudha of the 12 house house. We use the same rules that where outlined in calculating the arudha pada lagna, same rules apply.

This is of great interest as it shows one's marriage and spouse. First one may meet and have social relationships with a group of people. This is seen from the Arudha of the 7th house, as 7th house indicates relationships, and the arudha of the 7th is called the dhara pada.
Note , one may get an impression of the individual that one is attracted to and the dharapada is influencing, it is an impression - most notably favorable during courtship, yet still a 'reflection' of the individual. How often does one meet a person and think unfavorably initially, then over time, one changes their mind, and begins to appreciate the individual? This is the Arudha of the 7th, Dhara Pada, and the Aruda of the Lagna ( Pada Lagna) working at these times... we all have had this experience, either positive or negative.

From those relationships one may find a spouse , then the upapada (or the arudha of the 12 house) now influences. The upapada deals with the institution of marriage in this case.

One would say why the 12 house? The 12th house is also called pleasures of the bed, one shares their bed with the intent of procreation. The karaka ( significator) of the 12 house is Venus. There are others too, but for now lets just talk Venus, as we know has much to do with kama, and desires. In a momoment we will also talk of ther karaka's of the 12 house, but for now lets finish with the upapada for spouse.

If one now looks to see what graha's are in the Upapada house, the arudha of the 12th, it assists in understanding the marriage. Lets say ketu resides there. the marriage relationship can take on a spiritual bent, as ketu is karaka for moksha. The Sun in the Upapada can show a charming spouse from a most respected family ( Sri Ram had this for His lovely wife Sita, as sun was in Aries and exalted). Mar's may show a more demanding/commanding spouse lets say as mars and skanda are influencing; Saturn may bring grief. And if the Upapada has a graha that is debilitated, then the spouse may come from a commoner family. Now these are examples and are not the final say, correct? All things need to be looked at in one's chart and divisional charts.

What about the length of marriage - in the USA there are many divorces. What shows longevity in ones chart? The 8th house, and in a later post we will spend more time on longevity as we all will expire, yes?

So if one looks to the 8th house from the upapada, one will get a hint on the length of the marriage. Now the opposing house or 7th from the upapada shows the the 'death' of the marriage. Some even say one needs to look at the 7ths & the 2nd house from the upapada, as it too is a marakasthana. Jaimini has many things to say on graha's in the 2nd house from the upapada and will be left for a different time.

Lets say jupiter is in the 8th, a benefic, and indicates a long marriage. Add in Rahu to these ideas and one can see where will be some bumps in the road as the natural badak (obstructor).

What else is of interest with this Upapada?
Since we are talking of the 12 house, a moksha house, this arudha of the 12th is also called the Moksha pada. It assists in indicating some of the activities and calculations for ones sadhana. Looking to see where ketu resides assists the jyotish in understanding ones spiritual pursuits. As yu recall , sun, surya is also the Atma karaka. So looking to the Moksha pada and viewing the locations of ketu, sun, jupiter, sani or saturn for tapas, all play a role for the moksha pada and the sadhu.

Jaimini is very clear on some of the predictions using the moksha pada. He says in the Upadesa sutras, ' if there are malefics in the 2nd house or apsects to the the moksha pada (upapada is the original name), one renounces the world.' Why so? It is to the death of the ego.

Also note in the case of spiritual pursuits and the moksha pada, the Sun is not a malefic. In many cases people see the sun as hot, rajasic, and energetic, therefore a malefic. Not so when dealing with moksha, as the sun ( Surya) is the natural karaka for the Atman.

Now , the natal chart , we call the D1 ( D= divisional or varga or amsa), the Navamsa or D9 (or 1/9th division) and the D7 or the saptamsa ( 1/7th division) charts are key for these spousal considerations. Specific rules are pointed out by Jaimini for the D7 chart and what one can expect.

I will leave it here, as we accomplished the definition of upapada and just a snippet of its use.

pranams, hope you find this of use.

The Sun in the Upapada can show a charming spouse from a most respected family ( Sri Ram had this for His lovely wife Sita, as sun was in Aries and exalted).

Om Shirdi Sai Ram.
Namaste Yajvan.
I have a clarification with respect to Sri Ram's Arudha Lagna and Upa Padha.
Sri Ram's Horoscope is as follows.
Lagna or Ascendent - Cancer,Sun - Aries,Moon - Cancer,Mars-Capricorn,Mercury - Aries or Taurus(I am not sure),Jupiter - Cancer,Venus - Pisces,Saturn - Libra,Rahu - Sagittarius and Ketu - Gemini.
This is as per Sage Valmiki's horoscope.
Now the Arudha Lagna is :
Since the Lord of Cancer Lagna ie; Moon is in Cancer itself , the Arudha Lagna is Leo.That means the Upa Padha is 12th from Arudha Lagna ie;Cancer which has the Planets Jupiter(Exalted) and Moon (Its own sign).
Hence Goddess Sita was a obidient wife of Lord Rama.
This is my undrestanding.
Request you to clarify.
