Namaste,

If you are just reading this post independently and wish to come up to speed on this subject, please consider reading http://www.hindudharmaforums.com/showthread.php?t=1607 (http://www.hindudharmaforums.com/showthread.php?t=1607) &

This conversation is a continuation of these posts above. What is the orientation for this post? A simple question one must have in their mind…How to compare and contrast a rasi (sign) With a house, a bhava? That is what is the difference so one has a POV on this?

Why is this appropriate now? Because Arvind has finished all 12 bhava definitions you can use as a reference, and the rasi posts 1 and 2 are there for your review and consideration.

Lets start. This information is part of the tradition of jyotishi's and I thank them for their insights and knowledge they pass on. Om Vinayaka siddhim Vinayaka Om... let Ganesha bring success (siddhi) to our learning.

Foundational Thinking
Think of the zodiac called Bha Chakra as if it was a clock. For this example the clock has two concentric faces on it.They are separate, yet share then same center point.. One dial face has 12 houses (bhava's) as the digits like a clock; the other dial face has 12 signs (rasi's). And what rotates around the center point? On a clock, it would be two hands, for this Bha Chakra it’s the 9 graha's that rotate and transit/move from sign-to-sign and from house-to-house.
[More on Graha's here http://www.hindudharmaforums.com/showthread.php?t=1642 (http://www.hindudharmaforums.com/showthread.php?t=1642) ]

This Bha Chakra is the source for all things on this earth and meters out these experiences to all things on this earth. So says the Satapatha brahmana, or the Brahmana of 100 paths:
katama ädityä iti. dvädaça mäsäù
Saàvatsarasyaita ädityä ete hédaà
sarvamädadänä yanti tadyadidaà
sarvamädadänä yanti tasmädädityä iti.
Translation: We speak of the aditya.
The twelve masa (months) that make a savatsara (year) are aditya.
They are the source of every material creation causing desire, delight,
passion, intoxication, exhilaration and stupor as well as the desire that causes wars and fighting. They are the source of everything that is ever received for they alone are the givers of everything and hence they are the aditya.

Practical Example
So , now when you look up in the evening you will always see the various constellations of the zodiac, the rasi's and each one has been called out. Now when you look up where will you see houses? That depends. The natural (naisargika) house alignment = the same sign listing of the zodiac's constellations. That is, the 1st house = Aries the 1st sign. The 2nd house = Taurus the 2nd sign, all the way to the 12th house = the 12th sign of Pisces.

Now where this changes, is when a jyotishi constructs a janma kundali chart for an event. Your birth is an event yes? So is buying a home, going on a trip, starting college, even starting death.

All events that happen have a beginning and will have an end. So, lets stay with births. When you are born and one looks east at the horizon at the exact time of birth what constellation is on the horizon at that time? Lets say it is Cancer.

Cancer now is the Lagna ( from lagnam = attached to - that is the rising sign is attached to the horizon, attached to the native).

Side note: When is one considered born? When outside the womb, when the infants head appears, the first breath, all are discussions amongst jyotishi's. Just as the question of sun rise. When one see's the first limb of the sun? its first rays? or the center of the sun on the horizon?

So using the dial clock analogy, the 12 signs have not changed, yet we take the second face of the clock and move or align the 1st house so it sits over Cancer. The 2nd house would then sit over Leo, and 3th house would be positioned over Virgo…until the 12house is positioned over Gemini. Now you have alignment of house and sign. Now there's some additional technical considerations that one may consider, but lets not much concern ourselves with that now.

We have to two dials aligned for our example. House ( bhava ) and Sign (rasi). And the graha's are within these constraints, and have specific longitudinal locations. The Jyotishi looks at a pachanga to find out who is where, or the Jyotish software application does this for the Jyotishi automatically.

Qualities of Houses and Signs

Houses
If one looks to Arvind's list of houses, you will see houses ( bhava's) tend to rule/indicate things ( noun's or a person place or things). Lets take a look at an example.

The first house is called Tanu Bhava or that of the body, ones basic disposition
The second house is called Dhana Bhava, that of wealth
The third house, Sahaja Bhava, that of brothers ( co-borns)
Finishing with the 12 house Moksha Bhava, House of liberation.See how it's a one word depiction of what the house entails? Yet 'things' associated with these concepts are expanded to include the tangential items associated with the house. Sometimes the association makes sense to the reader, sometimes not, but the wisdom of the rishi's logic holds true.

Take the 7th house, or the Kalatra bhava, house of the wife/partner. What is associated with the 7th is wife, yet passions, sex, business (relationships), the portion of the body below the navel, and death. Now here we are talking wife, partners, and the rishi's throw in death. Where did that come from? The 7th house is 7th from the 1st house ( life) and the 7th there from is the opposite, or death. So is the wisdom of the rishi's.

Same with the 9th house ( my favorite) - its the Bhagya bhava or house of Fortune. It deals with fortune. Yet it also deals with the 'fortunes' of guru, religion, dharma, divine grace ( as being 5th from the 5th house that deals with Mantras, knowledge, etc). So you can see how houses have this quality of dealing with nouns.

Signs
Signs deal with qualities or the nature and modes of existence…my one friend calls this flavors of life, colors of life. Lets stay with our example of Cancer, okay?

Cancer is an emotional sign, a feeling sign, sensitive, home oriented, imaginative, love of justice, impressions by feelings. Cancer is a water rasi, fluid flow, less rigid. It's owned by Chandra - moon, mind and emotions, water, evenings, etc.
One can see the 'flavor' depicted here? Again , this is for our example, as more can be discussed, but its best to keep our conversations simple to form the paradigm here. And what is that?

Key point
Signs influence houses by their flavors/qualities/colors… as if the Houses are wearing Signs as their sun glasses. As you wear different glasses and you see things in a different light, like that, the signs are the glasses, the houses are the eyes ( the things, the nouns). Lets take a few examples.

Example 1 - Aries the rasi as the 1st house ( bhava)
In this case , 1st house also = beginnings yes? You 'begin' on this earth, with the lagna, located in the first house. What do we know about Aries?
It's the 1st sign and hence has a strong creative principle. It's dynamic, energy, its owner is Mar's ( tejas or fiery). So if we take the 1st house now that is Tanu bhava, and we said this 1st house is about ones self , one disposition, you would see this person as passionate, confident, outgoing, with energy to get things done. Maybe this is the fist person out of the gate on a project or to accomplish something. Aries people are movers. There is rag-guna at the base of this sign, and Brahma the creator is the owner.
Now you say, you know some people that are Absolutely NOT like this… yep! And that is where the conversation takes up to the Arudha Lagna. Where what you 'see' it not who the person really is…more on this can be read at this post http://www.hindudharmaforums.com/showthread.php?t=1633 (http://www.hindudharmaforums.com/showthread.php?t=1633) The Arudha lagna is how the person is viewed in society. The Arudha, the image, the maya of the Lagna ( Lagna is satyam of the native).

Example 2
Lets stay with the Aries individual. The 2nd house (bhava) from Aries is Taurus, and is Dhana Bhava , the house of wealth. Now this second house is owned by Venus, Shukra. Venus then is that of the arts, finer things in life.
Taurus has qualities , flavors of beauty and luxury, fondness of pleasures, and indulgence. Yet is also an earth sign, practical, patient and persistent. So lets add it up: 2nd house ( wealth) + Taurus the sign as beauty and luxury, yet practical. So the Aries lagna person, when gaining wealth would not mind spending the wealth on pleasures and luxury items up to a point of where the Taurus influence of practical would intervene.

So , perhaps luxury within limits may be this persons motto. This call can change once the jyotishi sees where Taurus' owner, Venus resides. This will influence this houses activities, as will the graha's that reside in the 2nd house, but lets not pursue this just yet.

All these influences are substantial as they can be positive, negative or neutral. Taken together a qualified Jyotishi can view the potential, possibility and promise of shown in ones janma kundali ( birth chart)
As you can see its like a 3 dimensional chess board - that of house (bhava) + Sign ( Rasi) + planets ( Graha's). And we have not added in 11 upagraha's + 16 divisional charts. Vedic Jyotish is a very robust science and (for me) a life time of learning.

Lets stop here for now. More on this as interest from the reader demands.
