Namaste,
sarabhanga writes the following, found in the Definitions folder under the letter R
rudra means “crying, howling, roaring, dreadful, terrific, or terrible”.

There is only one rudra, and there are innumerable rudrAH ~ counted as eleven in the Vedas.
____________________________________________________________

Rudra plays a key role in jyotish, as the coming and goings of beings on this earth. As the Veda's point out, there are ekadasa rudrah, or 11. According to Jaimini muni the lord of the 8th, from every house, except for the one occupied by Guru, is rudrah. From a jyotish perspective, rudrah's are responsible for holding prana within the body of the jiva.

We know at the time of death, this prana leaves our body, as prana is the raja-tattva, all the senses are dependent on this prana. Once this prana have left, the physical body is no more. And what happens? The family and friends weep as per sarabhanga's definition, " rudra means crying, howling, roaring, dreadful, terrific, or terrible". Yet there is much-much more to this name then this idea offers.

The remains is a dormant body for decay. Thus through Lord Siva, Maheshvara, ( Maha = Great + isha or Lord = Great-Magnanimous Lord) the appointment to tamoguna is carried out. The 11th rudra, which is the 8th from the Atma-karka, as you would think is key, and is Maheshvara. He is in direct contol over the seperation and delivery of the atma.

Now what happens after death, the location of and the time periods of the one departed ( not the body, but the atma+manas) is a subject that is very in depth. From a jyotish perspective the time of death can give a glimpse to the next station that native may occupy, its length, location , etc.

Thus just as a birth chart shows the makeup of the indiviual on this earth, a death chart, gives a clue on what is in store for the native upon dropping the body.

A hint of Brilliance In Jyotish
A hint is the 7th house from Lagna is a maraka. Note that in the natural chakra, Aries being the 1st house, and Libra being the 7th house, Sun (Surya) is debilitated ( or nicha as it's called) there, in Libra. The sun is the karaka about life, vitality, energy, and is debilitated. Yet who owns this Libra? Venus.

What do we know of Venus ? that of pleasures of the senses yes? This is the clue - the maraka, the 7th is the killer of the true Self ( Sun) , karaka of the lagna. This 7th brings samsara, or repetitions of birth. The spiritual is over-shadowed by the senses-material part of existence, i.e. nicha in Libra. Therefore Venus is the Karaka of pleasures, and karaka of the 7th house.
Side note: this is one reason from a HDF Canteen post on last weeks date for 07-07-2007, I think 7 is NOT a lucky number, as it brings rebirth.http://www.hindudharmaforums.com/showthread.php?t=1665

Let's take a look at who is exalted in Libra, the natural 7th house? Sani. And spiritually what does Sani bring to the sadhu ? Restraint. That is, the endurance of tapas, of being one pointed in one's spiritual practices. Sani has gotten the ire of many a jyotish because he is also associated with grief. Yet he brings much good. The part that we perhaps are not comfortable with is his level of discipline. This becomes the discussion preyas ( more agreeable) and sreyas ( superior or dearer) choice of actions. Perhaps another HDF member can present a post and discussion on this for conversation.

So Rudra in ones chart as Maheshvara is of great import. This brings us to Siva as Natraj. We have discussed this before. We See Natraj ( nata= dancer + raj or raja = King) in His dance representing all of creation, His dance. Yet when we look He has one foot on a human being, some say baby, some child, some say adult. Why is this? Siva/Maheshvara/Shankara brings liberation from samsara, that 7th house, birth and rebirth cycle over and over again. This is His blessing to us, once we understand and choose to move in this direction. This is the choice of sreyas over preyas.
