Namaskar everyone,

I am wondering if anyone could give me some information about Raksha Sutra of Lord Shiva.

What is it? How to respectfully tie it? Where to tie it? What's the history/purpose of it?

I gather from the name is that it is for protection. The reason why I ask is that I have been given one by a very kind person but I don't know what exactly to do with it. If I have to tie it on my arm, for how long?

Namaste Satay,

The thread should be tied around the right wrist, with the following mantra:

येन बद्धो बलिःराजा दानवेन्द्रो महाबलः ।
तेन त्वामनुबध्नामि रक्षे मा चल मा चलः ॥

yena baddho baliḥrājā dānavendro mahābalaḥ |
tena tvāmanubadhnāmi rakṣe mā cala mā calaḥ ||

And it should remain tied for just as long as it lasts !

Namasté,

Reviving this thread (raksha sutra? thread?! HA HA :p ) because seeing as Rakṣa Bandhan is coming up anyway, I wanted to ask: where on earth did the above mantra come from?

I've read that the origin of Rakhi itself is in the Bhaviṣyat Purāṇa, but not having read the document for myself I can't confirm this. I've seen the mantra posted in many places and called "Vedic" by some, but there's never a source attributed.

:dunno:
