Namaste,
In the last several posts I have offered some of the components of panchang or panch 5, + anga, or limbs ; the 5 limbs or components of the day. When one understands the panchang of the day, the native can look at the influences that come from the grahas and their combinations and see what is favorable or unfavorable.

A few recent posts we listed out some of the pachang components:

dina - or the day of the week. Which graha, owns the day (solar day) and a few qulaities
nakshatras - all 27 nakshatra's have been listed out in a post
Nitya Yoga - we listed out 27 yogas that are formed each day and hence at ones birth
karana or the The half day - nothing posted on this as yet.
Tithi or lunar lunar day. This will be pursued in this in this post. … many people talk of them, but not much is known about their groups.Today's tithi as I type is Krishna Ekadasi, the 11th tithi, and this forms a siddha yoga (a yoga for success in actions). I will explain this siddha yoga in a second as it helps people with the section of actions.

Tithi¹ ( तिथि) is a lunar day ; there are 15 in the bright half of the month (sukla) and 15 in the dark half ( krishna) i.e.

Shukla Paksha- the bright half of the month; from the New Moon to the full Moon. 15 tithis belong this cycle
Krishna Paksha- the dark half of the month; from the full Moon to the New Moon. 15 tithis belong to this cycle.What is so interesting about this? There are 5 groupings of the tithis. Here's their names and qualities:
nandA - delight , felicity ; prosperity , happiness
bhadra - blessed , auspicious , fortunate , prosperous , happy ; good , gracious , friendly , kind
jaya -conquering , winning ; conquest , victory , triumph , winning , being victorious
rikta - hollow , hollowed ; poor , indigent ;emptied , empty , void
pUrNa is then filled , full , filled with or full ;fulfilled , finished, accomplished ;complete , all , entire.
pUrNA - we know as the 15th tithi, and pU is to make clean or clear or pure or bright , cleanse , purify , purge , clarify

The Groups

The nandA group: the 1st, 6th and 11th tithi
The bhadra group: 2nd, 7th and 12th tithi
The jaya group: 3rd, 8th and 13th tithi
The rikta group: the 4th, 9th and 14th tithi
The pUrNa group: the 5th, 10th and 15th tithi

Here is where a siddha yoga is formed:

When one from the nanda group occurs on a Friday (like today of this posting) a siddha yoga is formed;
The bhadra group: on a Wednesday
The jaya group: on a Tuesday
The rikta group: on a Saturday
The pUrNa group: on a ThursdayWho owns these days and groups then?

The nandA group: Friday and therefore Venus
The bhadra group: Wednesday and therefore Mercury
The jaya group: Tuesday and therefore Mars
The rikta group: Saturday and therefore Saturn
The pUrNa group: Thursday and therefore Jupiter.
If one knows what action is going to be done from a planning perspective, one can look to the day and align a tithi to receive the maximum help from the grahas. If you refer back to the post on http://www.hindudharmaforums.com/showthread.php?t=2606 (http://www.hindudharmaforums.com/showthread.php?t=2606) , it will help you with the quality of the day; then getting help from the yoga formed by the sun+moon ( the tithi) this helps the individual with the action that is to considered. A Conquest ( jaya tithis on Tuesday gains the support of Mars) , meeting a wise person and perhaps the guru (pUrNa tithis and on Thursdays), like that one can consider these selections for actions; Jobs, interviews, learning, travel, relationship building (Fridays), etc.

More if there is interest.

Namaste
the above post offered one part of pachang - tithi. Other posts¹ also give the components of the pachang for one's consideration.

Yet a basic question, what are the rules or priorities for picking a good day?

First let me mention one avoids both solar and lunar eclipses as at that time rahu or ketu is at hand. Yet for sadhana, this is a good day for the 'inward stoke' as they say.
A Total Lunar Eclipse happens this month ~ 20 Feb 2008. See NASA for this and others : http://sunearth.gsfc.nasa.gov/eclipse/OH/OH2008.html. To see the path of visibility ( all of India, and the West) please consider http://sunearth.gsfc.nasa.gov/eclipse/LEplot/LEplot2001/LE2008Feb21T.GIF
A partial Solar eclipse happens the 7th of Feb. A total Solar eclipse happens the 1st of August, 2008.
That said, Jyotish wisdom suggests that the nakshatra the lunar eclipses appears in, for the 20 Feb, 10 PM (+/-) USA, Eastern Std. time, it is Magha, the nakshatra in Leo. It is considered a 'spoiled' nakshatra for auspiciousness for 6 months.So with eclipses out of the way, how does one pick a good day for an event?

Choose the day of the week and the influence of the graha, yet;
The tithi will have more influence, and will supersede the day of the week, yet;
Nakshatra overrules the tithi , yet;
Having Jupiter ( Guru) and/or Venus ( Sukracharaya) in and angle or trine ( kendra or trikona) brings auspiciousness.
But how does one know if Jupiter is in a kendra or trikona ? It is based upon the Lagna at the time of the event - Hence Lagna is of Key Import for selecting a excellent muhurta².This leads one to say how is it possible to get ALL these timings to line up? It is rare when all come together at once. So the wise native then chooses a time that collects as many good qualities, positions and timings as possible to give a most favorable outcome as possible.

What else can one do? Pick days with favorable yogas i.e. the combination of the sun + moon angles to each other , such as a ravi yoga¹, a siddha yoga, amrita yoga, and sarvartha siddhi yoga.

More as usual if there is interest.

I thought to extend this post regarding tithi's… The posts above gives the reader a good baseline on tithi qualities and needs to be reviewed to bring out the most value for this post.

Lets look at the nature of each tithi just in a word or two, I think you will get an idea of the tithi-s influence for the day. Combine it with the post above and one can see the strength of the tithi - by sukla or krishna ( bright or white, and dark) parts of the month.
We will look to the tithi's prada प्रद - the giving , yielding , offering , granting , bestowing , causing , effecting , uttering, influence.

Tithi by lunar day, the name of the tithi and the devata

2 ___Dwitiya_______ Brahma_____ mangala - auspiciousness
3___ Tritiya ________Gauri ______ bala - strength, power giving

7___ Saptami ______Surya ______ mitra - friendly
8 ___Ashtami ___ __ Shiva ______ dvandva ( dwandwa) - giving conflict
9 ___Navami ____ __Durga ____ _ ugra - agressive

posted on Sukla Navami tithi ( 9th tithi , bright half of the month); Chandra is on the 1st pada of Hasta Nakshatra. Why did I post this today? Sun + moon forms a ravi yoga and removes any blemishes or inauspiciousness.
