Namaste Devi,

You can get the dates on MyPanchang.com (http://www.mypanchang.com/) for many major cities around the world.

Mahashivaratri this year will be March 6 in India (midnight between Mar 6 and Mar 7) and March 5 in North America (midnight between Mar 5 and Mar 6). When it is celebrated in a given temple depends on whether they celebrate specifically according to their time zone or not.

Aum Namah Shivaya.

Namaste Zara,

Also check the previous Maha Shivaratri (http://www.hindudharmaforums.com/showthread.php?t=1018) thread. There's some information there as well.

Aum.

I totally agree with you Agnidevaji. I am from seattle, and the hindu temple in bothell www.htccwa.org (http://www.htccwa.org) is celebrating on March 5th as per the site you just mentioned, and there is another temple in maple valley area called Sanatan Dharma Temple ( www.sdtccwa.org (http://www.sdtccwa.org) ) is celebrating as per India's Time ( March 6th ). The thing that is confusing is that they also claim on their website that their festivals are calculated as per seattle's longitudes and latitudes.... too much confusion created by temples........

Namaste Vinayakji,

Yes, temples sometimes create unnecessary confusion about festivals. Many of the dates listed on the second site are clearly wrong for Seattle. The Hindu calendar is region specific and needs to be calculated based on local longitude and latitude. Simply going by dates of celebration in India makes no sense whatsoever.

Only if you are in India. When you observe the eclipse in america or europe do you observe based on Indian time there? Do you subtract the time difference to view eclipse? Same way standard time difference needs to be subtracted to arrive at tithi ending time in appropriate location you are and then rule for mahashivaratri, "Madhyaratri vyapini on chatrudashi" needs to be applied. If chaturdashi is visible previous day in the location you are at then it's previous day otherwise the next day. Please read detailed explanation at http://www.mypanchang.com

Thanks.

I did write to that temple, I got following response:

"Namaskar

Thanks for your feedback. I looked into your concern and talked to our Pandit Sanjay Shastri Ji. It is decided to follow the Indian Calendar from now on instead of updating some of the dates based on Seattle (it causes all kind of confusion). We will update our website to reflect the change.

May God bless you and your loved ones!"

It seems that priests are the one who make decisions when to celebrate what festival. Something you don't expect from priest. I am not sure if he has appropriate knowledge in this subject.

Namaste Vinayak,

Again all of this makes no sense. They may get away by saying we celebrate festivals according to the calendar in India, but how do they justify saying that poornima (full moon) occurs on Feb 21, when it occurs at 19:30 PDT (7:30 pm) on Feb 20 in Seattle?

Even in India, calendar for one place is not valid for another. For example, this year, Gudi Padwa/Yugadi/Nav Samvat (Lunar New Year) falls on April 6 if you're in Mumbai, and April 7 if you're in Hyderabad. Even though both cities are in the same time zone, there is a 22 min difference in local sunrise times, and that makes all the difference.

I just found another temple in texas, celebrating mahashivratri on wrong day.

http://www.hsbv.org/2008/calender_2008_balaji.pdf

The weird thing is they put the newmoond and fullmoon dates correctly, but observing festivals that falls on those days on wrong days...

I think we can create another thread to maintain this list. Someday they will search internet, and finds this thread and learn from their mistakes......

Namaste Vinayak,

Yes, that's a great idea. Go ahead and create a thread and we can discuss further. Perhaps the moderator can also move the relevant posts to the new thread.

Namaste Shian,

At Shivaratri, it is proper to fast, either not eating anything or taking only fruit and milk. And most Shaivism normally assumes a vegetarian diet, although Shaktism may be non-vegetarian.

Pranam all

Aum namah Shivaya
Most of the rest of the world are celebrating Maha Shivratri today.
I am surprised at the lack of interest, on this forum on this Auspicious day.
Perhaps most of our friends are busy fasting and chanting.

Aum namah Shivaya

Whatever karma i have committed with my hands, feet, voice, body, actions, ears, eyes, or mind, whether prohibited by the scriptures or not, please forgive them all. Hail! Hail! O ocean of compassion! O great god! O benevolent lord!

Aum namah Shivaya

AUM namo nArAyaNa

Thank you for providing the transliteration. Maybe you could tell if there is any relation betwen the mantras and the photos.

Namaste Nuno,

I have already given very much explanation of “AUM namaH shivAya” ~ see: http://www.hindudharmaforums.com/showthread.php?t=6 ~ and I have been waiting for a vaiSNava explanation of “AUM namo nArAyaNa” or “AUM namo nArAyaNAya”, but most vaiSNava comment on this forum has only been disparaging shaiva and shiva rather than explaining anything about their own dharma.

Personally, I don’t use “namo nArAyaNa” for meditation, but only in worship, when an image of nArAyaNa appears before me. So a deep understanding of the mantra’s implications is not my forte. But I have made many posts on the nature of nArAyaNa, especially regarding relationship of nArAyaNa and nara.

Every nAga makes himself an image of shiva (i.e. nara), and as such, in the eyes of others, he becomes an image of nArAyaNa. Every dashanAmi sannyAsin meditates on the pañcAkshara mantra, and greets every other dashanAmi sannyAsin with “namo nArAyaNa”. And a dashanAmi nAga (such as dhuna giri jI) thus becomes a veritable twin of nara and nArAyaNa.

This mysterious twin has been the subject of very many posts, and all of the two line equations that I have presented are reflected in this same mantrau (mantra twin).

And the “two birds” scenario depicts nAra and nArAyaNa and nara in various combinations.

And the post was inspired by the conclusion of the shivarAtri vrata.
