Is there a relation between Trimurti and Christian Trinity?

The Trimurti (English (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_language): ‘three forms’; Sanskrit (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanskrit): trimūrti) is a concept in Hinduism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hinduism) "in which the cosmic functions of creation, maintenance, and destruction are personified by the forms of Brahmā (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brahma) the creator, Viṣṇu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vishnu) the maintainer or preserver, and Śiva (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shiva) the destroyer or transformer."[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trimurti#cite_note-0)[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trimurti#cite_note-1) These three deities have been called "the Hindu triad" [3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trimurti#cite_note-2) or the "Great Trinity (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trinity)".

Brahma = Creator

In the bible jesus is described as the creator (word of god)

John
1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was with God in the beginning.
3Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4In him was life, and that life was the light of men.

Siva = Destroyer

The Father is described in the bible as the punisher and destroyer of evil
He wiped out the evil in sodhom and gomorrha and send the Flood to eradicate the evil.

Visnu = the preserver and maintainer

the holy ghost is described in the bible as the preserver and maintainer, he helps in the right time at the right place, the holy ghost preserved the apostles from evil

Namaste,

this is an interesting idea and i have thought about it too. i came to the conclusion however that they do not match up. the roles of the trimurti are not as clearly defined as that of the trinity. after all, it is from vishnu that brahma emerges and creates the world, so in this case who is the creator and who is not? in christianity it is a common believe that christ was with god since the beginning as is described by johm. this is not exactly accurate though if you take into account the three synoptic gospels which establish jesus as the son of god. when considering the holy spirit too, it was sent from god to protect and guide the early church fathers. the holy spirit is not a perserver of the world. in fact many consider the holy ghost to not be an actually entity but a metaphor. trinitarian theology isn't clearly stated in the bible and there are plenty of christians who disagree with it. in fact in the early church there was internal fighting over the idea of the trinity.

one common ground however is the idea of three divine persons in one god, which is how the catholics describe the trinity. this would be similar to some of our monotheistic concepts.

i hope this made sense at all. to sum it up though, no i don't believe the christian trinity is the same as the trimurti.

Jai Sri Krishna!!!

The Hindu TrimUrti is the three facets of the Absolute Truth realized and taught us by the Rishis of yore. The Christian Trinity is a concept evolved by the early Church fathers. It is said that there are as many as six kinds of Christian Trinity, which is thus mired in controversy, confusion and control. Therefore, in my opinion, there is no scope for comparision between the TrimUrti and Trinity, however far fetched.

The Christian Trinity is said to have evolved from the pagan tradition of speaking of the father, mother and son as the family trinity. Here is a link that explains the evolution of the Christian Trinity and what is wrong with it:
