Jaya Ho!

I have learnt enough Hindi to be conversant in the language and understand its written form in the Devanagari Script. i would like to embark on learning Sanskrit since a lot of the texts I want to study from [i.e. Meru Tantra, Kulacudamani Tantra etc] are in Sanskrit and have not been translated into English or Hindi. I can read some fairly intense Hindi works such as novels, commentaries and translations of Tantras, so I guess that is sufficient for my purposes.

The big problem I have encountered is that the closest person who is familiar with Sanskrit is about an hours drive away. So I would rather begin learning from books, my key interest is in Grammar.

Could anyone suggest a series of books to start off Sanskrit (particularly Grammar) from a beginners level and then slowly migrate to intermediate and Advanced texts? Books with plenty of exercises would be appreciated, I have contacts with some book retailers in India and can order locally published texts from them.

Certainly advice from members who have studied Sanskrit would definitely be appreciated since I am as serious about learning this language as I was with Hindi.

a good start would be to learn spoken sanskrit-which is much simpler than Vedic Samskrit.
'Samskrita Bharathi' regularly holds workshops all over the world. So look out for one.

hello,

what do you mean by spoken sanskrit, do you mean classical sanskrit?

Namaskar,

"Spoken Samskrit" as taught by Samskrita Bharathi is a step by step approach to learning Samskrit starting from basic everyday conversational language leading up to the understanding of the Scriptural texts

Their approach being that it would be difficult to understand Shakespeare if we do not understand basic conversational English(which is easier).

I do not know the difference between Spoken Samskrit and Classical Samskrit

Thanks

I was looking for these websites from the day i was born. I do have books such as UpanshiSangraha belonging to my Father but it is wirtten in Sanskrit so i can't read. Therefore i decided to learn the holylanguage . Our school doesn't teach it so does the others so i was forced to learn Sanskrit by myself. I was searching some source for sometime. Thanks, Sanskrit is necessary in life

You say "tava" not "thava", it's not aspirated.
