Hi all,

I have been looking online but cannot find any good stores for where to get puja items.

I'm just looking at my choices for what to get for my birthday/christmas and would like to see my options.

So, what stores do you get puja items (spoons, bells, thali, cups) from?

thank you!

I'm not sure how many Indian stores are nearby you. But lots of Indian grocery stores here do stock some items. Usually they are never of high quality. Even sandalwood, kumkum, and vibhuthi are stocked in some. Perhaps they export the low quality stuff, and keep the good stuff at home. But you'd pretty much have to go to each of them to find out. Its always a fun quest. My guess is the best bet in North America would be the Little Indias in New York or Toronto. In the meantime, you can make do with whatever you have.

I did a bit of searching too on line. There seemed to be several somewhat decent sites.

Another option is to decide exactly what it is you want and need, and someone from India who frequents this place can buty them and ship them via DHL. If you tell me what you need , I can look here in Edmonton as well, but like I said the quality won't be very good.

Thank you EM!

Im not worried about quality TOO much, just that I have them, which i think is important at this point.

Question - for the aarti, what kind of oil should be used? should wicks be soaked in the oil that is going to be used?

Just curious about aarti and etc. because im used to using tea lights, but those cannot be re-used...

We use ordinary vegetable (Canola) oil in my house and at our local temple. Coconut oil is also an option. Some folks use ghee. I don't think it matters but hey I could easily be wrong.

Hi EM,

would the wick be fed through the bottom and up in a lamp such as this?

thank you.

Yes indeed. But the far easier type just has the wick hanging off the edge. There are very fancy ones called alankara deepams that can have like 100 flames all going at once.

Thank you. So, you use a long wick, feed it through, light it, and just re-light the burnt wick that you used last time? :)
