Why does it not work for me?
I just see the message

but cannot write into the field directly.

To activate the 'quick reply' click on the 'quick reply' button for the post that you want to reply to. It is the right most button beside Edit, Quote, Multi Quote... buttons. Look at post instead of looking at the 'quick reply' window.
