The database collection is great but if you intend to study Sanskrit seriously it is always better to get a textbook. From all those you can obtain from online bookshops, "Introduction to Sanskrit 1" by Thomas Egenes is the best, especially if you (MananAtma) feel you don't have a flair for languages. It is very slowly paced, offers clear grammar explanations accompanied by enough exercises and revision, and makes you feel you are making real progress.

Other books on the market are, in my opinion (I teach foreign languages), not suitable for a beginner, especially not for one who has not studied other languages before. They offer a lot of stuff in little space and potential students, being overwhelmed with so much information, prefer to give up right at the beginning than to plod through so much material with little hope of light to be seen at the end of the tunnel.

You can check it out, say, at http://www.amazon.co.uk/Introduction-Sanskrit-Pt-1-Thomas-Egenes/dp/8120811402/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1282310243&sr=1-1

namaste everyone.

Here is a great way to learn the basics of Sanskrit:
http://www.geetham.net/forums/showthread.php?33481-Samskrit-Language-Teaching-VCD

Just download the first CD and check if you like their way of teaching, and if so, you can order the entire set of 40 DVDs here:
http://www.sanskrit.nic.in/publication/av.pdf

My Sanskrit self-learning is off and on and very tardy, so I am planning to buy the DVDs (I downloaded and like a few of them) shortly, to get some fillip to my self-learning of the language.
