Sarvebhyoh namah - namaste to all you
puja koti samam stotram stotra koti samo japah
japa koti samam dhyaanam dhyanakoti samolayah
(krishna arjuna samvade - uttara gita - mahabharat)
In a conversation of krishna and arjun, krishna said - the result that
we get by performing karodo pujas is equal to performing of 1 stotra,
similarly karod stotras is equal to 1 japa, karod japas is equal to
1 dhyaan and karodo dhyaan is equal to 1 mano layah.
meaning of japa -
janmaantara sahsreshu krta papa pranaashanat
para deva prakashaatca japa ityabhidheeyate
(kularnava tantra)
In the word japa ja means - removing of paap from 1000's of birth
and "pa" - by doing which it causes to appear the lord(pratyaksh)
is known as japa.
vyaakhya - This is the main goal - the lord should come pratyaksh
by our japa. And it happened to one of my bhakta dost that he got
pratyaksh darshan of krishna after doing japa for several months and
if we too want to achieve darshan of lord it should be nitya i.e other
than eating, sleeping only japa should be performed and niskamah
(with no other worldly desires)
ahar nisham japan nama krshnam pashyati cakshusha.
(padma purana)
By doing nitya japa we get pratyaksh darshan of krishna.
meaning of word mantra -
mananaat tattva ruupasya devasya amita tejasah
trayate sarva bhayatahstasman mantrah itiritaha
(kularnava tantra)
In the word mantra man means - By doing manan(dhyaan) of the
lord and tra- frees us from the samsara bhaya therefore it is
called mantra
vyaakhya - Therefore before doing japa we should first do dhyaan
of the istadevata and then do japa ,doing which makes the mind
steady on the form of the lord while doing japa and no other
thoughts appear. In the parashara samhita it is said - japa and
dhyaan are interlinked.
Three forms of japa (according to kularnava tantra) - Doing japa
uccha (loudly) is the lowest of all with less result ,upamshu
japa(unheard to others,in less voice) is of medium result and
manasika is the best of all.
vyaakhya - One may say that prabhupadji told to do loudly, that is
because since he was preaching in america and many were begginers
and doing louldly others can hear and benefit he said so. Doing
in upaamshu the throat doesn'nt get dried and one can do many
rounds.
apavitrottariya cshaashucirgachhamscha no japet (kularnava tantra)
Wearing apavitra uttariya and walking one should not do japa.
vyakhya - by walking,we cannot concentrate on the ruupa of the
lord and other thoughts enter .Also one should do it mauna(without
talking to others)
