Could You list Vishnu / Vaishnava mantras to chant, please - that are real vaishnava ones and not sectarian (eg. ISKCON) related?

Namaste Elizabeth,

Here is a great Vaishnava mantra that I chant and meditate upon:

"Om Namo Narayanaya"

Here is a video of 54 repetitions: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBy0nU2rPEY&playnext_from=TL&videos=Dc2I_HGvsDc

You can also chant "Om Namo Narayana", but for me personally I chant "Narayanaya" because it has a better effect for me. Just try them both out and see whichever one works best for you.

Also, please don't get the impression that the Maha Mantra (Hare Krishna mantra) is for ISKCON members only. The Maha Mantra has been around for hundreds or even thousands of years before ISKCON and can be chanted by any Vaishnava or any other Hindu. It is just that ISKCON places such a strong emphasis on that mantra and it is their main form of prayer.

Jai Sri Krishna

Namaste Ramakrishna,

Thank You for your reply especially the video included - a good way to get to know how to correctly pronounce the mantra. (Hoping its pronounciation is correct... :) )

As for the Maha Mantra....
Can You, please, refer me to a source, writing that is about it, but not ISKCON related? I would be grateful for that one, too.

I sometimes chant the mahamantra, but I'm not really a strict Vaishnavite. ^_^

Here's one for Rama:

Om Sri Rama Jai Rama Jai Jai Rama
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cfn_WMCHKaU

And here's another general Vaishnavite one:

Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya

Namaste Elizabeth,

This is a good non-ISKCON site about the Maha Mantra: http://www.stephen-knapp.com/chanting_hare_krishna.htm

Of course, most websites about the Maha Mantra are ISKCON-related, since they are so closely associated with the mantra and are the most popular advocates of it. But I think this is a pretty good non-ISKCON site about it.

The main point is that the Maha Mantra first appeared in the Kali Santarana Upanishad, which although the exact date of origin is not known, predates ISKCON by hundreds or even thousands of years. It is chanted by many non-ISKCON Hindus, including myself. We just don't chant it 1728 times a day and place such a strong emphasis on it as ISKCON does.

My dear Elizabeth,

The sweetest and best of the Vishnumantras is the great Vishnu Sahasranamam (The thousand names of the Lord). If you go to the website, http://www.hindu-blog.com/2009/06/vishnu-sahasranama-mp3-download-vishnu.html, you can download Vishnu Sahasranamam in MP3 format from Padma Purana. This is slightly different from the famous one found in Mahabharat. You can find many websites which host MS Subbulakshmi's rendition.
