Vannakkam:

I don't see how yoga would help with the diets and over consumption of fast food which is the main reason for the obesity crisis.

That's true.

Hopefully, yoga may help those children become more mindful of what goes in their bodies. I don't know how likely that it is, but if not though, we may end up with some people who can touch their toes without bending their knees but can't run for a bus. :D

Namaste,

This is very interesting indeed. Obesity has become a huge problem in the United States. It is even worse down south where I live. However, most of the children and teenagers where I live are involved in at least one sport. It is mainly the adults in my area that are overweight and obese. But as a whole, childhood obesity is rising in the United States. At least where I live, I don't think launching yoga in schools would pass. All the fundamentalist Christians would be opposed to it.

This is a very good point. There's really no point in doing yoga if you're just gonna go out and eat cheeseburgers and fries. The people's diet is the main cause of obesity. But some steps are being taken. In my county, french fries are no longer served in school lunches. Middle schools also aren't allowed to sell sodas anymore.

My next door neighbor eats barbecued food at least three times a week for dinner. As you can imagine, he is overweight. Even when it's 40 degrees outside in the winter, he'll be out there barbecuing his steak and burgers.

Another thing, especially with young people, is that eating at fast food restaurants to hang out is common. Whenever my friends want to hang out, they want to go to Sonic, Taco Bell, or some other fast food place. I usually just go and get a drink. I eat fast food about once every two months (Taco Bell is good). They eat fast food at least once a week. I don't know what happened to going to someone's house, going to see a movie, or just to get coffee. I guess I'm old fashioned :)

The First Lady of the United States is also doing a lot to end childhood obesity. I saw something once about Hindus pushing for greener lunches in schools with more fruits and vegetables. I think that might have actually been with the acclaimed Hindu statesman. IMO that would be much more effective and plausible in decreasing childhood obesity in the United States than launching yoga in schools.
