Why is this the end of anything as we know it? It is well known for a long time that the mosaic religion is based on an ancient semitic tribal religion, similar to others of that region, and probably influenced by the first historical monotheism, the egyptian cult of the sun god as "Aton".

Hinduism goes back to the vedic shrauta dharma and other ancient indigeneous religions and has now also developed into something completly different from its origins, due to the passage of time, same as the monotheistic religions. When abrahamic religions are dead in one shot just by being different today, from what they have been in the past than also Hinduism should have been declared stone dead long ago.

The idea that the ancient Hebrews worshipped other gods alongside Yahweh is nothing new. The Old Testament itself records this fact. The development of pure monotheism comes later in its history, probably around the time of the major prophets, such as Isaiah.

This is all interesting stuff, but I don't know that it would signal the death of the Abrahamic religions. Most Abrahamics who actually bother to educate themselves are aware that the ancient Israelites worshiped other gods alongside Yahweh. Actually this goes as late as ~600 BC. In the book of Ezekiel, there are many mentions of Israelites worshiping other gods alongside Yahweh, and of Yahweh being angry at this. Conservative Christians and Muslims will answer this by saying that polytheistic worship of Yahweh alongside other gods is a pollution of their true religion. They might also say that the true God simply allowed Israelites to call him by the name of one of the gods they were familiar with. This is similar to how Christian missionaries will trick Hindus into converting by calling Jesus "Prabhu Yeshu." However deceptive this may be, it certainly doesn't mean that Jesus is a Hindu God.

The fact that ancient Israelites worshiped multiple gods is very well known. Even the Bible admits this. The question is whether this is the natural and good state of man, or whether the true God considers this a perversion. Abrahamics would obviously say the latter, whereas we Hindus usually would prefer to judge the religion by how its adherants behave. Either way, this really doesn't affect Abrahamic claims. In this respect, Abrahamic religion has to be tackled on the philosophical level, not the historical level.

However, there are certain historical claims that we should debate. The historicity of the gospels and of Mohammad's recorded life would be examples of things we should scrutinize.

Namaste,

I watched a History Channel documentary several months ago called "A History of God" and it mentions how the ancient Israelites were polytheistic and gradually developed to monotheism with Yahweh as the only God. This is nothing new.
