While I never eat beef I do like chicken and fish.

I would like to become a vegetarian and was wondering if there are some good books to read to get started in the right direction?

Thanks

Vannakkam Malamalas: Besides technology Vegetarianism is one of the fastest growing changes in consciousness on the planet, especially here on the west. Any bookstore worth a grain of rice will have several selections. It isn't difficult to find a wide variety of information, or plain cookbooks. Here is one link. Another place to start is amazon.com . Really, the fear of becoming undernourished is overblown, and added to by propaganda from the meat and dairy industries. People stay alive (not without long-term effects though) on ridiculously unhealthy diets of junk and fast food.

I used to enjoy eating chicken.

Today I held a plate for my cousin and couldn't stand the smell of it. Yuck!

Don't be afraid to make the change, it will be highly beneficial, to your mind and body. They will thank you!

Namaste MalaMalas,

I can't recommend any specific books, but as Eastern Mindji said, any decent bookstore will have a variety of good books.

There are also other resources and methods that may help you become vegetarian, such as reading up online about the health and medical effects of meat on the body, as well as watching videos or just reading about the conditions and barbarity of chicken factory farms.

Good luck on your journey.

If you still like chicken and fish, then there are "fake chicken" and "fake fish" products out there. They use soybeans, mushrooms etc to create the look, feel and taste of meat but they are 100% vegetarian. If you are in the US, look for Morningstar Farms or Boca brands.

I love fake meat -I've eaten it regularly since I became vegetarian and have no plans to give it up...ever.

Namaste,

This is great advice. I also eat a lot of the "fake meat" products. While I don't necessarily agree with the premise of it (like the idea that I somehow wish I was eating real meat), I still like it nonetheless and I also understand that it's eaten by a lot of new vegetarians who miss eating real meat. But they really come in convenient, and they also taste great and are very healthy.

French Fries are vegetarian...

Just sayin'. ;D

I could probably eat nothing but fried potatoes for the rest of my life and be quite content. One time, I had my cholesterol tested, and the doctor said that my body was so low in cholesterol that I needed to INCREASE my consumption of it.

My co-workers could not believe this. They all said, "But Bryon...You eat French Fries all day! How can this be?" Because I didn't eat the hamburgers that usually accompany them!

Of course, eating Fries all the time is also probably not the best diet. But when people tell me they're struggling with vegetarianism, I always suggest they eat something well...indulgent (fries, popcorn, chocolate, etc.). Vegetarianism has this stigma of being nothing but salad a lentils, but people forget that so many delicious things happen to not be made of meat.

Vannakkam: Many aren't. Ask McDonalds who lost the lawsuit on it for 2 million dollars, and still didn't change. But yes, if you cook them yourself at home, or ask the restaurant how they're cooked, (lard, or vegetable oil) you can tell.

Ain't nuthin' like cuttin' up some potatoes and cookin' them in peanut oil.

Believe it or not, there are no chain restaurants in a 20 mile radius of my house, and I am less than "trusting" when it comes to the ingredients at the "greasy-spoons" around here.

Damn. Now I know what I'm making for lunch today.

Vannkam: Oddly enough, so am I. http://www.hindudharmaforums.com/images/icons/icon7.gif I wish they'd come out with a curried flavor. I suppose I could stir in a little garam masala.

They're just too convenient.

Namaste, MalaMalas,

Three years ago, I wrote some pages for my personal website about vegetarianism, including ideas and thoughts, a few recipes, book recommendations, and other websites I'd found useful. I hadn't yet found Sanatana Dharma, so my writings tackled vegetarianism from generic 'ethical' concerns, as well as health and social concerns; nonetheless, I hope at least a little of the information helps!

Book recommendations and recipe links are here: http://www.white-phoenix.net/recipes.php (http://www.white-phoenix.net/recipes.php)
(Many of the books I recommend, I originally checked out at my local library; hopefully yours will carry them too.)

Thoughts and websites are here: http://www.white-phoenix.net/veganfaq.php (http://www.white-phoenix.net/veganfaq.php)
