Maa,

You have my unfailing love and devotion. You know my needs more than I do. Please free me from the bonds of maya. May I ever be your willing servant! Grant me your blessings.

Jai Maa!

Does anyone know if there is a specific bija mantra for Ambe? I know the one for Durga Maa. Does that cover all bases?

Not having much luck with my searches on the net.

I have one very simple stotra for Durga to say in the morning right after you wake up:

प्रातः स्मरामि शरदिन्दुकरोज्ज्वलाभां।
सद्रत्नवन्मकरकुण्डलहारभूषाम्॥
दिव्यायुधोर्जितसुनीलसहस्रहस्तां।
रक्तोत्पलाभचरणां भवतीं परेशाम्॥

prātaḥ smarāmi śaradindukarojjvalābhāṁ|
sadratnavanmakarakuṇḍalahārabhūṣām||
divyāyudhorjitasunīlasahasrahastāṁ|
raktotpalābhacaraṇāṁ bhavatīṁ pareśām||

प्रातर्नमामि महिषासुरचण्डमुण्ड-
शुम्भासुरप्रमुखदैत्यविनाशदक्षाम्।
ब्रह्मेन्द्ररुद्रमुनिमोहनशीललीलां
चण्डीं समस्तसुरमूर्तिमनेकरूपाम्॥

prātarnamāmi mahiṣāsuracaṇḍamuṇḍa-
śumbhāsurapramukhadaityavināśadakṣām|
brahmendrarudramunimohanaśīlalīlāṁ
caṇḍīṁ samastasuramūrtimanekarūpām||

prātarbhajāmi bhajatāmabhilāṣadātrīm
dhātrīm samastajagatāṁ duritāpahantrīm|
saṁsārabandhanavimocanahetubhūtāṁ
māyāṁ parāṁ samadhigamya parasya viṣṇoḥ||

Namaste Sahasranama,

Do you know the name of the stotra you have given? Also, is there an English translation somewhere I could have a look at?

C.Smith, I haven't been able to find a bija mantra for Amba. I assume She and Durga will share the same seed sounds. I did find this lovely gem though:

Om Ambe Ambike Ambalike na
Manayati kashchana
Sasatyashwakah subhadrikam
Kampilvasinim

Om namah Shivaya

This is named the bhagavati stuti and also known as prata naman stotra. I do not have the translation.

Okay, this one is not simple, but if you don't listen to it, you will live the rest of your life in vain.

This is a beautiful prayer. My mother likes Devi Mahatmya. We must understand Her and be grateful to Her as YogamAyA, VishNumAyA and hence i like the "Ya Devi ..." prayer in post 11.

Prayers like these - Devi Kavach - are a worship of the Mother Goddess for material success and protection , and to sail through this world. While no doubt, She protects us and keeps us materially comfortable, takes Her advanced bhaktas beyond the material wants and bestows good qualities, this prayer does not immediately focus on Love for Govind - prem, and it is not a complete or final surrender, perhaps a possible precursor. Shaktas will argue it brings Love for the Mother.

On the other hand, Gopis worship Her to obtain Shri KRshNa Govind as their Husband, they do not say "rupam dehi, jayam dehi yasho dehi". They don't ask for success, wealth, victory or beauty of this material world. Their complete surrender is at His Lotus Feet. Their protector, giver, and sarvasva, is Govind. As compassionate Mother, she gave them their Happiness, saubhagya - this is spiritual saubhagya we are talking about , not material. Yes, MA gives KRshNa, She brings KRshNa, but ONLY if that's what the living being wants. Actually it is Govind as the antaryAmi, SuperSoul, paramAtmA who grants wishes of the jiva, but it appears that it is coming from Devi.

Hari (VishNu/KRshNa) drives away material trushNA with His flute, attractive form, names, qualities and highest LOVE. To His devotees, He says they should worship Him alone and none else (Bhagavat Gita).

Whereas, Devi nourishes Her children with lots of material comfort so that they are content and ready to move beyond it.

Just an observation. I may have missed something though, as i have not read Devi MahAtmya.

Govindam Adi Purusham Tam aham bhajAmi ~
Jai Shri KRshNa

At the end of the Devi Mahatmya one devotee is given mukti and the other bhukti according to their desire. ;)

This is another stotra for Durga when Arjuna was instructed by Krishna to pray to Shakti right before the battle of kurukshetra: http://www.srimatham.com/storage/docs/arjunas-hymn-to-durga.pdf

Those who liked listening to the devi mahatmyam may also like to listen to the Sundara Kanda which suprisingly can also be found on youtube. (sorry for posting in the wrong thread)

I chant "Om Dum Durgaiya Namah" very slowly on my mala, putting the greatest emphasis on the "Om". I hope that the Divine Mother reads what's in my heart for Her and overlooks any mistakes in pronunciation.

"May my every thought, word, and deed be ever directed toward perfecting understanding and performance of Your Divine will; I surrender completely unto You, without reservation or hesitation!"

Here is also a nice bhajan (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvJUMbJsjpc)

JAI MAA DURGA JAI MAA AMBE JAI MAHADEVI JAI MATA DI!

My soul is in the image & likeness of God. It is therefore perfect and immortal. O Divine Mother, strip away my false identifications with my body, my thoughts, and all sense objects.

Found a rather nice, plaintive rendition of the Bhagavati Stuti that Sahasranama shared with us earlier on in this topic. Enjoy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-aqs-azTN0

Divine Mother, ever do I feel Your loving arms embrace me. I only need to close my eyes and cry out Your name and know I am never alone. I am no longer the "I" when I am in Your presence. I am just one tiny shard of You, a miniscule piece of crystal that will eventually find its way home in You along with all my brother and sister jivas. In You we will someday dissolve. But for now, we, Your poor, wandering children are lost in the sea of samsara, fighting the currents of ego that wants to pull us under, weathering the karmic storm and riding the waves that threaten to engulf us everyday. Divine and Most Compassionate Mother of the Universe, please don't abandon us. Please reach out Your hand and pluck Your little children from the heaving waves. Please be a constant reminder to us that You are the rudder in our hearts and the wind in our sails. And most of all, Beloved Maa, please never let us forget Your love.

Om namah Shivaya
