JAGANNATHASHTAKAM
- written by Adi ShankarAcharya, sung by Gaurasundara - Lord Chaitanya (Chaitanya MahAprabhu)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1Orc2ZuuWg&feature=related

The story behind JAgannath form - well, is a long story. For some other day. The story behind the song is not that long. The Lord traveled to the JAgannath Temple at Puri and on the way He sang this song.

kadAchita kAlindi taTa vipina taralo...

LYRICS and Translation:

dukulam netrante sahacara-kataksham ca vidadhat
sada shrimad-vrindavana-vasati-lila-paricayo
jagannathah svami nayana-patha-gami bhavatu me (2)

Shri Jagannathadeva holds a flute in His left hand; He wears a peacock feather on His
head and a fine yellow silken cloth around His hips; from the corners of His eyes He
bestows loving sidelong glances upon His companions; and He is forever known as
the one who performs wondrous pastimes in the divine abode of Shri Vrindavana. May
that Shri Jagannathadeva be the object of my vision.

jagannathah svami nayana-patha-gami bhavatu me (4)

Shri Jagannathadeva is an ocean of mercy; His bodily complexion is as beautiful as
a bank of blackish rainclouds; He sports with Lakshmi-devi and Sarasvati; His face
is like a fully blossomed spotless lotus; He is worshiped by the foremost devas,
and His transcendental glories have been sung in the topmost scriptures. May that
Shri Jagannathadeva be the object of my vision.

YAMUNASHTAKAM - by Vallabhacharya :

Glories to YamunA MahArAni

I offer humble obeissances to that Devi YamunA, presiding deity of the Yamuna River, the fourth consort of Shri KRshNa, who serves Him constantly - letting Him and His comarades splash in Her waters in the summer heat.

VallabhAchArya composed this beautiful ashtak (8 verses) and devotees sing it regularly for YamunAJi's Grace in attaining pure love of Shri KrushNa. It is said that MahAprabhu VallabhAchArya is Yamuna Devi in swaroop (spiritual form).

SHRAVANAM - Listen: *In the beautiful voice of Lata Mangeshkar:

Shloka 1

Namami Yamunamaham sakal-siddhi-hetum-muda

Murari-pad-pankaj-sfurad-amand-renutkatam I

Tatastha-nav-kanan-prakat-mod-pushpambuna

Sur-asur-supujit smarpitu shriyam bibhratim II1II

I (Shri Vallabh)bow joyfully to Shri Yamunaji, the giver of divine super natural powers for experiencing the bhagvadleela. Shri Yamunaji is loaded with the glistening sands emanating from the lotus feet of Murari Shri Krishna. The water of Shri Yamuna is scented with the perfumes of blossomed flowers from the forests located on the banks of Shri Yamuna, such Shri Yamuna is worshipped by gods and demons equally. II1II

Shloka 7
Mamastu tav sannidhau tanu-navatvam-etavata

Na durlabhtama ratih Mur-ripau Mukund-priye I

Atostu tav lalana surdhuni param sangamat

Tavaiv bhuvi kirtita na tu kadapi pushti-sthitaih II7II

O beloved of Mukund Shri Yamuna! By your nearness let my body become new(worthy) so to gain the love of Shri Krishna-the enemy of demon Mura- is not difficult. So let us shower you with love(by prayers) as Ganga became famous only after merging with you and was not worshipped by Pushti-Jivas before that.II7II

YamunA MahArani ki jai

Hare KrushNa

An ashtak is an eight-verse composition of glories and prayers. Many times a ninth verse is found in the end - this is phala-shruti , the benefit of singing.chanting the ashtakam - as is found for other compositions. Jagannath and Yamunashtak above have this ninth verse included.

Please add your favorite ashtakams here - there are GovindAshtak, KrushNAshtak, AchyutAshtak by Adi Shankar ...

** JagannAthashtakam was composed by Adi Shankaracharya, but sung by Lord Chaitanya and can be sung in Raga Jhinjhoti in Dadra Tala or Raga Bhatiyara in Jhaptala acc. to KKSongs.org - the place for bhajans

** DAmodarAshtakam was composed by Satyavrata Muni, narrated to Narad Muni and ShauNak Rshi and recorded by Shrila VyAsDev in Padma PurAN. It is sung everyday in Kartik in raag AsAvari (my favorite) in EktAl acc. to KKSongs.org

This info can be found at the bottom of the lyrics under "Remarks/extra information."
