Namaste,
ON a few posts I have brought up Jyotish also called the science of light. It is our good fortune that this was given to us by the Sage Maharshi Parashara ( also a seer of in the Rk Ved), and is considered the fountainhead of Jyotish.
Study of this great science is an endeavor that takes some time for absorption and use, yet one is a better person for it. Let me share a few concepts that may be of interest.
Ideas On Ones Birth Chart;
One needs to recognize the following truths: a Person’s chart (kundali rasi) shows ones merit s/he has earned ( the laws of cause and effect are universal). The birth chart shows where that merit will manifest, and when; so the chart shows ones "promise, potential and possibility". But where? The 4 areas of life:
Dharma ( in ones chart this dharma repeats 3 times; the 1st the 5th and the 9th houses. Dharma, we have discussed means that which upholds.. but upholds what? Right thinking, living, acting, doing i.e. satvic behavior and is key to a society.
Artha – ( repeats 3 times 2nd, 6th, 10th houses) – and is of wealth matters i.e. accumulation there of;
Kama – ( 3rd, 7th, 11th houses) and the desires of the individual;
Moksha – ( 4th , 8th and 12th houses) – Moksha or Enlightenment has to do with liberation; its interesting to note that the 4th house is here indicating education, which helps with moksha. Also the 12th house, which has to do with sleep, or rest, meditation, helping with moksha.

Now, this Jyotish is very robust - how so?
This science not only looks at one chart, but its "harmonic" or divisional charts . There are 16 Varga ( Divisions) charts you can view; This is no different then a scientist looking at the sky – " Lets look at the sky though a telescope and view the universe in visible star light" , " now lets look in infa red", now lets look in X-Ray" etc. Like that the divisional charts show this information to the trained Jyotisha.

A chart and its divisions is like that; One's Spiritual Path ( D9 chart), ones Parents or lineage ( D12), ones Wealth creation (D2), Past karma (D60) etc. Also, one can look at road blocks and what causes them; As you can see people have different experiences on this earth, and some have good fortune for a time and some have bad fortune for a time. This is all hooked to ones chart, and the timing of the charts (called Dasa periods) – Michael Jackson, the entertainer, is the best example from the material point of view as and example of ups and downs:
Known world wide because of the music career ( D10 chart) ; His father played a key role (D12th chart)… He went through media-mayhem and is on a downward stoke. These periods, can be seen in ones chart.

Just the opposite can been seen from the avatars ( my favorite and my guide is Sri Ram's chart, Jai Ram Sri Ram). Yet his years of seclusion in the forest can be seen in His chart, and the 'secrets' of how this is calculated is held by jyotish lineage ( parampara), only given to those of guru-sisya tradition.

Meditation and Mantra Shastra
With the right vibration ( mantra) the influences and benefits in ones chart can be enlivened and encouraged. Its all about sound. That is what the Sama Ved is all about Sound. A whole part of the Ved is about sound and form and the relationship between the two. This is the greatness of the Ved. That said, the vibrations of the mantra stimulate parts of ones chart/dharma to manifest. So the right sound from the right knowledge at the right time is key... right time? The most auspicious time of the year ( sun in the northern direction), or when the sun (surya) is in its home ( Leo) or exalted position ( Aries) all plays a role. Or the time of day, month, etc is the science of Muhurta.
Yet, the mantra to stimulate ones unfoldment , we consider a Moksha house ( also called bhava, and the sign is called rasi). What are the moksha houses? the 4th, 8th and 12th as stated above. Hence Mantra selection is of key import to ones well being and the proper length, sound quality, etc must be considered.

Single bija mantras are good as they influence ones lagna ( pronounced lug-nah) as is ones ascendant or rising sign as one would say. Now, without going too deep here, western astrology charts will not match Jyotish charts and ones lagna will be different in both. There is a difference, as one is tropical , and Jyotish is sidereal ( following the stars).
The Lord of the ascendant is important and also its karaka , which means significator. And for all people on this planet the Sun ( surya) is the karaka of the lagna/first house. As the Natural indicator of the Atma, Surya hosts and holds ones health. He is also significator of the 9th ( a dharma house). So the sun plays a key role in our chart, as does the lagna, and Chandra ( the moon). It is therefore auspicious to stimulate the 1st house with a bija ( single syllable) mantra. Only good comes from this.

And the sun has a greater influence during his natural dasa period ... the natural dasa periods are the following - note your age, look below and that is the natural dasa period you are in. There are multiple other dasa systems ( Drig, Vimshottari, Narayan,etc)
1st dasa: Moon Period: 0- 1 years Duration: 1 year
2nd dasa: Mars Period: 1- 3 years Duration: 2 years
3rd dasa: Mercury Period: 3- 12 years Duration: 9 years
4th dasa: Venus Period: 12- 32 years Duration: 20 years
5th dasa: Jupiter Period: 32- 50 years Duration: 18 years
6th dasa: Sun Period: 50- 70 years Duration: 20 years
7th dasa: Saturn Period: 70-120 years Duration: 50 years

People usually say, where's the other planets? where's Uranus, Neptune, Pluto? Jyotish recognizes graha's , or that which bind. And even two 'shadow' grahas of Rahu and Ketu. Hence, Uranus, Neptune, etc are not part of this knowlege. Yet there are even more graha's called upa-graha's, but maybe we leave this for another time.

Lets stop here for now.. but thought it was worth a few minutes of discussion to bring this knowledge to this forum. Let me end with a salutation to the graha's ( and when we read in the Bhagavad-Gita, that Sri Krsna enters into these bodies, there is a great respect for these entities).

Salutations to the navagrahas, the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu
