Tiruchendur is the second abode of the six chosen spots of Lord Muruga, as described by Nakkirar, the famous Tamil poet. It is situated 40 km south of Tuticorin along the beautiful shores of the Bay of Bengal. It is said that Lord Muruga camped here along with his army to defeat the demon, Surapadma. It is for this reason that this place has become one of the “Padai Veedu”, meaning, the battle camp.

The other names for Tiruchendur are Thirucheeralaivai, Jayanthipuram, Thirubhuvana Maadevi and Chathurvedi Mangalam.

The glory of South India Pilgrimage (http://www.tiruchendurmurugantemple.com) has been praised by Nakkirar in his poem, Thirumurugatrupadai and in other Tamil works like Purananooru, Silapathikaram and Devaram. Another famous Tamil poet, Arunagirinathar has compared Tiruchendur with Thirukailai, the abode of Lord Shiva in the Himalayas.

Vannakkam Murugan: Please tell us of your personal thoughts on this sacred temple. Rather than just posting information, I'd like to hear more of your direct experiences.

here are some of mine from an earlier post on HDF. http://www.hindudharmaforums.com/showpost.php?p=28084&postcount=14

Personally I have experienced many things about this sacred temple.

Recently we did our brother's marriage in this temple only.

Few years back, In my dream I got the pictures of Tiruchendur Murugan temple daily, when I discussed about this to a priest, he said to me to go to the temple and worship the lord. Then I went and worshipped Lord Muruga. After that I did not see those pictures in my dream. I felt like god itself called me to this sacred place.

Whenever I speak or hear about lord murugan this the first thing that comes to my mind.

One of the greatest temples in the world undoubtedly!

Sri Subramanya is especially significant for Tamils and as Lord of Kali Yuga, for everyone as well.

VetrI-vel, arOharA indeed!

A nice video of the temple: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5MdytFLeCA0

Vannakkam: Thanks for the video, TTA. Now in my daydreaming state riding comfortably in a car through the Bharat countryside, totally relaxed (NOT) because of the Bharat trafffic and roads, I often dream ... if there was one place I could set up a home away from home ... say for 3 whole months ... rent or lease an apartment, do a bit of western adaptations like a decent water filter, decent cooking stove, and the like, where would that place be?

First choice ... Tiruchendur ... never too hot, small town not like the bustling cities, steady climate, the beach, the temple, beautiful ancient people, pace is slow, not too many touts or beggars, no barking dogs at night, beautiful walks, really safe, tropical foliage everywhere, 10 kinds of local bananas, maybe I could really learn how to make a twisted garland if I volunteered my time at a stall, just hanging around ... the life of Riley, go to temple once a day ... watch the pilgrims come and go ... learn a bit more Tamil ... listen to the peacocks, watch them fly to land atop the gopuram

Second choice ... none, now that I think of it.

vaNakkam EM.

You have described it graphically. May that TC Murugan grant you peace and happiness, and a chance to reside near him. IMO, TiruvaNNAmalai could be one such place too. TiruchirApaLLi is a place where tradition competes with modernity, but then it is far too crowded, although there are quiet places around its periphery, like TiruvAnaikkAval.

Vannakkam: For those who've never experienced a crowded puja in hectic temples full of wonderful noise. Enjoy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmiN_9hfJqk
