Sri. Krishna Janmashtami is observed on the Ashtami tithi, the eighth day of the dark half or Krishna Paksha of the month of Bhadrapada in the Hindu calendar, when the Rohini Nakshatra is ascendant, this year it will be celebrated on the 22nd of August.

Sri. Krishna Janmashtami Celebrations

Janmashtami is a two-day celebration in many parts of world. The first two days are celebrated colorfully and the merrymaking reaches its peak at midnight of the first day, when Lord Krishna was born. To mark the birth of the deity, the idol of the infant Krishna is bathed and is cradled in the midnight time. Conch shell is blown and the devotees celebrate the birth of the Lord Krishna by singing devotional songs and by dancing with great joy. Thereafter, mouthwatering sweets and dishes are served to the devotees.

What’s special for this year's Janmashtami , share your love for Bhagavan here.

A place to share you thoughts, childhood experiences, pictures, videos etc on Sri. Krishna Janmashtami.

ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय

Love:)

In the ignorant days of past
From the quicksand of material world
You come here to pull us out
In those wee hours of Brahma-muhUrta dawn
As sleep still covered the mind
Made a herbal paste of many herbs
With lots of love, mortar and peslte
And sweet halwA-shira of ghee
In a large bowl did nestle
Applied the paste to Your Lotus Feet
Poured crystal pure Ganga-jal over Them
Only to find a surprise nectar so sweet
They were glowing - flourescent blue !
Yes, Your Lotus Feet that give salvation
From Which the Ganga flows
Those Very Feet that are the source and sink
Of this adhyAtma-path and realization
Nectar for the eyes, they could not move
Away from the beautifully flourescent Feet
That illuminated the pitch-darkness of dawn
Tears of joy rolling down in the silence of the morn
Offered Naivedya sweet
Woke up smiling to brush it away
And forgot all about it
Instinct made her cook a sumptuous meal
And offer it as naivedya - this she did not know why
No explanation for this behavior whatsoever
Silly, shook her head, the day passed by
At night when all the world slept
She accidentally saw on TV
The news was playing on screen
Today was Shri KrushNa JanmAshtami !!
Oh my g o o d n e s s !
It was none other that Shri KrushNa JanmAshtami ~

Dear Smaranam: You have always upheld your love and devotion to surrender at the feet of Lord Janardhana through your beautiful poetic renderings. It should be a glorifying moment to all, if you could repost your earlier works in this thread and make us fortunate to listen to that again. Love:)

Namaste Brahman

Thank You so much for this thread, the Janmashtami special picture frame (a gift) and those rarely seen South Indian and Tanjore paintings. Thanks for all the ornaments on this thread.

My poetry - can be really bad, from the perspective of being a poem. It is just ideas, thoughts put together. You have always been encouraging, thank you.

Here is one of my early "bad poems" but KrushNa hides all flaws just by being Himself. (I shall post links to some others).

KRshna KRshna What do you see ?
I see sheer Transcendence looking back at me ....

His kindness and generosity.
His diligence towards each devotee.

The way He juggles the truth to keep promises.
He is the sweetest and humblest of beings despite being the Supreme Lord.
He is goodness personified.

His transcendental complexion , hue - no amount of color mixing in this world can generate that hue.
His Lotus Feet, anklets, flower-anklets and bracelets.
His long flowing hair,

the Banke-Bihari pose,

His various smiles.

The way He teases Queen Rukmini and His respect for Her.
The amused look on His face at Satyabhama's temper.
The innocent fluttering of eyes while explaining the butter on His face to Mother Yashoda.
His ecstatic love for Radharani (which made Him appear as Lord Chaitanya).

He is the reservoir of pleasure ,
the safest haven,
the ultimate shelter,
the Dearest to souls ...
... and a lot lot more...

Jai Shree Krshna Govind Mukund Murari !!

I stole Him from Braj !
Shri KRshNa Govinda hare MurAre
he nAth NArAyaNa VAsudeva ~
Hare KRshNa Hare KRshNa KRshNa KRshNa Hare Hare
Hare RAm Hare RAm RAm RAm Hare Hare ~

"KshamA karnA TauJi, mai aapke Kanhaiyaa ko churakar le ja rahi hun"
"Forgive me TauJi (BalrAmJi), but i am stealing Your KanhaiyA from Brajbhumi"

"Forgive me Yashoda MaiyA, i am stealing Your Lalla from Braj"

i paid my last final obeissances before leaving the Temple...

On the road out of VRndAvan BAL KRshNa was quiet and comfortable in the van - ... i gave Him some of His favorite munchies... then He looked drowsy and tired so i put Him to sleep.... but something was wrong..... i felt guilty for stealing Him away, although He was always there before this VRndavan trip....
how could i be so unfair to my dear KAnhA, and separate Him from His dearest vrajvAsis, and He is only a baby!

Despite such injustice that i was meting out, He did not complain. His silence made my heart cry....
then the solution came by.....

The entire Braj poured, cascading down into my heart in the form of the waters of Yamuna ... the pure sound and scent of the Yamuna in the background. Then it was quiet again....

So i have to change the title of the story to: "I stole Braj from Braj."

Dear Friends,

What most of us forget is the fact that on this beautiful auspicious day
of ashtami, its not just the Parabramha swaroopi Sri Krishna who took birth,
but He also brought with Him His Divine Sister Sri Yoga Maya Durga.....it was
on the same glorious night, just after Sri Vaasudeva made His lotus petal colored divine feet touch this blessed planet of earth, Sri Parameshwari Durga also made Her Divine presence on this blessed planet....

A brief summary of the background story as per our Puranas..

In the previous Kalpa, there was a Prajapathi named Sutapa...his wife was Prishni...They were extremely devoted to that Sri Pundarekaaksha[One with lotus eyes]...they both did severe penance in order to see Sri Keshava[One with beautiful hair]....
Sri Maha Vishnu appeared in person with His divine form...having the beautiful
Sudharshana chakra, the divine conch called Paanchajanya and His club.....
Prishni and Sutapa were spell bound upon seeing that Divine form of Sri Hari....

When Sri Narayana asked them what is it that they prayed for, the blessed couple said that in every "janma of theirs", they want Sri Maha Vishnu as their son....
Sri Hrishikesha[One who is the lord of senses] smiled and granted them their wish...

The same Prishni and Sutapa, were born as Kashyapa[son of Prajapathi Marichi and Kala] and Aditi
[daughter of Daksha]....and as per their boon, Sri Trivikrama was born as Sri Vaamana, to Kashyapa and Aditi...

Aditi and Kashyapa took up yet another janma where they were born as AanakaDundubi[Vasudeva] and Devaki.....

At the same time, Bramha was very much impressed with a Vasu named Drona and his wife named Dhara...Drona and Dhara were extremely devoted couple...Bramha instructed them to take up
a manushya janma on earth, in order to become parents of Sri Maha Maye Durga and in order to bring up Sri Purushotama Vaasudeva....hence Drona and Dhara were born as Nanda and Yashoda...

Sri Vaasudeva was born to Vasudeva and Devaki on this most auspicious ashtami and just after His birth on this planet, Sri Durga was born to Nanda and Yashodha....

Blessed are Vasudeva and Devaki..blessed are Nanda and Yashodha...blessed is this planet earth who could all see these two forms of Parabramha taking birth....who could see those divine
children...who could warmly embrace the Jagadodharana[One who uplifts the Universe] and Jagadjanani[One who is the mother of this Universe]....

Sri. Krishna at Durbar

Restless Heart, O Gracious Charioteer-of-Parth

As devotee sat on the floor
in front of the table of altar
A very tall and well built Govind
Climbed the wall next to it!
He appeared out of nowhere
And this time He was fair
Unlike the last time when He
Wore the same dangling earrings
Albeit as a pitch-black One with flowing hair
And unlike the time before that
When eyes closed for a moment's rest
He was flourescent blue with a pinkish fair maiden
Suspended in cosmic glare
Larger than life but not surprised
And what was that all about
Bringing the pinkish maiden
galloping on a white horse?
At each of these times one two three...
A purpose to appear had He
she knew why He did it
first to pick a devotee out of there
Then to grace with a visit - transcendental fare
Then whisk one away to realms here and there
Once to demostrate a point in context
With eyes reprimandingly wide
Other times just to grace with a smile
Once to say "Look: you are on your own, I am letting go of the reigns"
He HRshikeshA why did You that!
Horses helter-skelter did neigh
The chariot went zig-zag to the devotee's dismay
Completely free are You to do as You wish, my Beloved
But this time He had a mischeivious grin
As He flashed a glance back
And she knew exactly what He wanted to show and tell
Not just to shock her or cast a spell
It was just to succumb to a trivial query
That ran through the silly mind
How gracious is that Lord Supreme
To give in to a silly wish and dream
But to climb like a spider the wall so straight ?!
Certainly it had to do with His gait
Was it to show How well You vanish onto the altar next?
He wanted to show three things by context
Showed off His maroon sash also in the process
Did He take all these efforts just to play?
"What did you think? That I won't do as you say?"
Seemed to be His point that day
Too quick and agile was He for one slow to the message

Devotees report they catch You sneaking away!
So this how You natkhat play!
Then did you emerge from the vigraha so auspicious
Not before letting the GomAtA be conspicuous
Black they were all of them standing with blessing eyes
In halogen lamp-light so bright
Turn back and go straight and there You were playing hide-n-seek
Before one knew You slipped out right under her nose
Into the corridors of the unique Temple Divine
in broad daylight
He KAnhA KAnhA stop right there!
What style, Your head-dress was unique
A simple cowherd boy in cotton not silk
But You danced some steps and slipped away…

Oh KRshNA GovindA MukundA nArAyaNA
I yearn for You this very moment today
It is Your endless Mercy that You switch complexions or age
my heart is restless-heavy it was never like this till date
You have stirred something that was not stirred yet
When O when will be that day...
NArAyaNA when will You take me away?
So far i was happy to serve You here
Relaxed and complacent : "Oh KRshNa is right here, Lotus Feet stay, He is not going anywhere"
Not so this time to my own complete surprise.
Please don’t break Your promise on Your JanmAshTami day
KrushNAli can't go on and on this way

The Transcendental Mid-night Theif

ShrirangA, You took everything away
MAdhusUdanA, You took it all away
GovindA, You left NOTHING absolutely behind
ShrirangA, You took it all away
All this while
enchanted by Your beautiful smile
she let her self get engrossed in You
A fool she was to think You were just as much there as was she
Little did she know you were quietly peeling the kosha away
but appeared to only gaze in her eyes as did she
before she knew it she did not remain
protecting dahi-mAkhan in lofts huge pots
little did she know Your eyes are on her soul
penetrating right through the layers and peels
O GiridhAri You stole her away till there was none left
she did not remain
no mind no intellect no nothing no identifier
O KamalnayanA You took it all away

Now what is one to do?
Self-abhishek of pancha amrut nectar so sweet?
Milk yogurt ghee sugar honey scented water
Whom for those sahastranAmas and ashTashata nAmAvali
Whom for those lights and lamps and decorations and aaratis
Who is being welcomed and Who is welcoming
O MAdhavA have a heart...

Dear friends let me warn you of
that Transcendental Midnight Theif
Who will be here any moment now
As midnight approaches
Whether or not the moon is in Rohini
If you see that Lotus-Eyed dark Theif
Bolt those doors and shut those windows
Don't worry much about your dahi-maakhan now
He knows you will guard those
But His target is elsewhere
Much to your chagrin
He will take it all, nothing will be left
It will be all history and dream - your existence
Then don't say I did not warn you
O GovindA, You took it all...
Engulfed it in a gulp
left nothing nowhere no traces
O ShrirangA You took everything away...
