Malayala Ramayana Masam is observed in the Malayalam month of Karkitakam (July – August) .The entire month is dedicated to the recitation of the Adhyatma Ramayanam Kilippattu in the evening or morning. The Ramayan reading begins on the first day of the month and a portion of the epic is read on all days and is completely read by last day of the month.

Ramayana is a Sanskrit epic describing the deeds of Lord Rama, but the Ramyana recited during this period in Kerala is called Adyatma Ramayan, an unparalleled translation by Sri. Tuńchattŭ Rāmānujan Eḻuttacchan, a poet known as the father of Malayalam Language. It is also known as ‘Kilipattu’ Ramayana as the verses are presented in the form of a song by a bird.

After the evening prayers, family members – led by an elderly person in the family – sit before Nila Vilakku (Traditional Kerala Lamp) and recite the Ramayan. Adhyatma Ramayanam is in verse and it is a unique experience listening to an experienced person rendering the Epic in Malayalam.

Some people undertake a pilgrimage to the four temples dedicated to Lord Ram and his brothers in Kerala in the Ramayana Masam.

The Amavasi or No moon day in Ramayana Masam is dedicated to dead ancestors and Hindus perform Shradham and Tarpan and it is known as Karkidakavavu Bali.

Such a beautiful rendition. I have the Adhyatma Ramayana in Sanskrit-Hindi, unfortunately, I don't understand Malayam.

Adhyatma Ramayana in Malayalam renders emphasis on Bhakti that leads to liberation where as Sri. Valmiki’s Ramayan has all aspects of four Purushathas, so language won’t be a hindrance I guess!

Therefore Adhyatma Ramayan (http://www.4shared.com/dir/7694706/61bdb186/Adyathma_Ramayanam_-_Kavalam_Sreekumar.html) by Sri. Kavalam Sreekumar for you. Love:)

May I request you to briefly explain if the Adyatma Ramayan differs from the one in Sanskrit only in the language used, or are there any other nuances which are brought out in this version?

Pranam.

Dear Believer,

Rayman in Malayalam contains only 4000 verses against the 24000 verses of Valmiki Ramyan. Valmiki Ramayan is known for its greater clarification of all 24 syllables of Gayatri mantra in sequence. The version by its Malayalam counterpart does not feature such elucidation, instead it is a presentation of different Frame of references of Advaitha philosophy(POV), without omitting the full glory of the universal aesthetics and the story intended by the First poet Shri. Valmiki.

My approach towards this practice is pure sentimental than academic, as a 5 year old, I grew up hearing this version of Ramayan from my 90 years old Grandmother and continued till I was 10.
Also, this practice had many importance impacts on shaping up my thinking standards in my earlier life and I wish continue it, Believer. Love:)
