As a new devotee I'm wondering how exactly I should chant... I have been using the melody popularized by George Harrison... Is this blasphemous or a-ok in the Krishna manual? http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

Namaste AnrBjotk,

What melody by George Harrison are you referring to? "My Sweet Lord" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=el5djS_c4tE)is a great song. Although the "hallelujahs" coming from the crowd should really be "Hare Krishnas", as Harrison was a devotee of Lord Krishna and wrote the song about Lord Krishna.

Jai Sri Krishna

I know this is a late entry, but I'm just bouncing around.

I think the o.p. means the melody from the London Radha-Krishna Temple version, the one most popularly known.

Hare KRshNa

This is the tune in which Shrila PrabhupAd chanted (starts @3:08) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NCusDs1scmY&feature=related) in the early days of kirtan with his disciples. Shriman George Harrison made this tune (and the mahamantra as well as Krshna bhajan in general) very popular with his albums.

This PrabhupAd-kirtan tape is also played in many ISKCON Temples at "idle" times when nothing is going on - like late afternoons, mid-mornings before bhog-arati etc.

All glories to my spiritual master,

Dear AnrBjotk,

When I was first introduced to chanting Hare krishna maha mantra I was very glad to know the process of Chanting the maha mantra, which is made easily available for us by Lord Chaithanya Mahaprabhu especially in this kaliyuga - out of his cause less mercy upon these jivas drowning in this material ocean Bhava sagar . If we miss this opportunity it is never again possible for us to come so close to Krishna consciousness for the millions and millions of kalpas.

There are two ways of producing sound vibration of maha mantra as japa and Bhajan (Chanting and singing). The standard Srila prabhupada's tune of singing is already posted by our Smaran and there are hundreds of tunes available for singing by various singers. For Japa or Chanting, one of the recommended tune is available in this links the way FounderAcharya Srila prabhupada chants.
