If one assigns the Roman alphabet number-values (such as A=1 through Z=26) and represents the name DURGA as (4,21,18,7,1) the sum of the set equals 51:)

Maa truly is everywhere!;)

51 letters of the Sanskrit alphabet?

The sanskrit letters are also matrikas and matrikas are known to flight alongside Maa Durga when she goes to battle. All these shaktis are contained within Maa Durga as She is the Supreme Shakti

Namaste Pietro,
Certainly- 51 is the number of Shakti Peethas (http://www.vedarahasya.net/docs/Shakti.pdf). Hopefully the pdf in the link will be helpful and informative for you- far better than any clumsy attempt I might make by way of clarification!

Namaste PI,

I believe JaiMaaDurga might be referring to the letters of the Sanskrit alphabet? It would coincide with the belief that Goddess is the suppository of all the sounds of the universe. I've heard variations on exactly how many aksharas there; it seems to be anywhere from 50-54 syllables.

Vannakkam: I remember learning that 51 was associated with Murugan a long time ago. Funny thing is I can't remember the reasoning. It is reflected here though: http://www.murugantemple.org/staticcontent/ReligiousServices.jsp if you look at the prices. Its a very common donation number.

namaste.

The number 51, as related to Goddess Shakti, stands for the 51 shaktipIThas--abodes of Shakti. Check these links for details:
