I was watching some documentary the other day and it said that every major religion has their own prediction of the end of the world. Is this true of Sanatana Dharma?

Vannakam Tirisilex: Certainly not in any sense you're (or rather the documentary) talking about. Sounds like the old story of western based writers conveniently omitting Hinduism as a religion at all.

If there is a sense of ending, its only temporary, at Mahapralaya or something like that. (My memory fades away at times.) But then its just the end of one vast cycle, which starts up all over again. And of course the individual soul meets his end within some sects when it realises identity with God ... and moksha.

Actually, unless our universe has infinite energy, even according to science, the universe HAS to come to an end.

This is called the heat death (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat_death_of_the_universe) of the universe.

As EM says, Pralaya [dissolution] is only temporary. According to Hinduism, the unliberated souls will again pierce Prakriti and we would have another universe. So, not to worry :)

I don't think there is any such humanly conceivable fixed date for the end of the world according to Hindu scriptures. I believe the following 2 links will be beneficial in properly understanding time and how it is measured in Hindu scriptures.

Ok, assuming the heat death means a cold state, we can understand this as karmas being resolved and a cessation of the flux of emotion and passion, no more desire for (outward?) action.

And this piercing of unliberated souls could be an event like a big influx of heat, generating a new Hiranyagarbha followed by some kind of explosion (expansion?) that will put things into motion again (a new big bang?).

Just speculating, excuse this mind that is a little ignorant on hard sciences. :)
