Sri. Narayanu Guru (1854-1928) was an exceptional seer and sage, a knower of reality gifted with mystic insight.

His teaching is a revision and restatement of Vedanta philosophy’s central message of the non-dual nature of existence.

As we are familiar, the Upanishads, the Brahma Sutras and the Bhagavad gita together constitute the doctrinal foundations of Verdanta.

The polemical form of Badanaraya Sutras influenced commentators like Sri. Shankara, Sri. Ramanuja, Sri. Madhva and later commentators of Vedanta to adopt the same polemic style of presentation in their work. Subsequently, each school disputed the views of the other, finding support for its own views by appropriately citing verses and passages from selected scriptures, and a large and controversial body of literature was generated.

In all, there are some twenty-one (!!!) definitive commentaries on Brahma-sutras, each claiming to represent the meaning intended by Sri Badanaraya.

Unlike earlier propounders of Vedanta, Narayana Guru did not add to the plethora of commentaries on Brahma-Sutras; nor did he write commentaries on any other Vedantic source-book. Instead Guru wrote a new Sutra composition called the Vedanata Sutras, which removed the accumulated dust of centuries of misunderstanding obscuring the clear light of Vedanta’s central message.

Vedanta Sutras of Narayana Guru is not in the polemical style of Sri. Badanarayana Brahma Sutras, but a simple, original, aphoristic restatement of the essential teachings of the Upanishads. This makes Narayana Guru the only later-day interpreter to present Vedanta Philosophy in a fresh and original Sutra form. The Vedanta Sutras of Sri. Guru thus have a unique place in Indian Philosophy as the first Sutra expression of Vedanta since Sri. Badanarayana.

Although Sri. Guru, essentially a non- dualist did not solely subscribe to and support the Sri. Sankara school of philosophy, nor did he oppose the teachings of other schools. He saw that Absolute Reality comprehends the immanent and transcendental together, and that both duality and non-duality are valid perceptions from different standpoints. His comprehensive vision and contemplative insight reconciles superficial disagreements between different Vedantic schools. In short, Vedanta Sutras of Sri. Narayana Guru restores the pristine vision of the ancient Upanishad Rishis.
