Namaste,

I was moved to learn Sanskrta by way of hearing a part of the RigVeda sung. I didn't know the meaning, it just moved me like I've never been moved before. I have since not found that site, but continue to be drawn to that particular text.

So, I'm interested in what others may have found, either by way of purely the sound or by its content (or both), to be the most beautiful passages or rendering of the Rig Veda.

I don't know about rest of the the Rg Veda, but i like the Purusha Sukta very much. It eulogizes and describes the Cosmic Soul, Purusha, Lord VishNu NArAyaNa

If you like the ṛg ved (rig veda) then you will enjoy the sāma-ved. Why so? The sāma-ved's contents is all of the ṛg ved's mantras or we say saṃhita¹. It is has an evolutionary influence on one's consciousness.

1. saṃhita - means joined, uniterrupted (chanting of the mantra-s); the flow or sameness, sāma.

Thank you. That is a very nice rendering. I know there are many, however. I guess this is not the place for this question. Any suggestions anyone?

Peace.

Namasté, Amala,

Yours is a good, but difficult, question; the English language isn't rich or nuanced enough to approach the beauty and depth of Veda. And, unfortunately, most of the English translations out there are superficial, assigning a literal/physical meaning to the Sanskrit words, ignoring the spiritual.

However, since you asked for beauty, here are some recommendations based purely on aesthetics. (I am not a Veda scholar, so please don't take my reply as any sort of authority on Rig Veda and its wisdom.)

If you can find a book called Hymns of the Vedas by Abinash Chandra Bose, it is a very loving treatment of the Vedic hymns and Devatās, with some translations included. The first two hymns on this page (http://sivaloka.tripod.com/rg_ved.htm) are translated by Bose. (I also copied a bit of his prose here (http://maghavan.wordpress.com/2011/08/03/abinash-chandra-bose-hymns-from-the-vedas/), if you'd like to read a short excerpt from the book.)

Griffith's translation is one of the sort that I mentioned above, very literal, but every once in a while he finds a turn of phrase that is quite lovely, or else his forcing of Vedic verse into English iambs actually works in a strange, chant-like way. Favourites of mine are here (http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/rigveda/rv10054.htm) and here (http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/rigveda/rv08027.htm).

A must, I think, is David Frawley's book Wisdom of the Ancient Seers: Mantras of the Rig Veda. You may preview the book here (http://books.google.ca/books?id=_pApS8AwrQ8C&printsec=frontcover&output=html), and typed from my own copy, a brief taste, taken from a hymn to Mitra-Varuṇa:

"Guardians of truth you mount your chariot, who possess the law of truth in the supreme ether. Whomsoever you favor, Divine Friends and Lord of the Vast, for him the honey laden rain pours from Heaven.
As universal rulers you rule the world, the Divine Lord and Friend, who have the vision of the Sun-world in the sessions of knowledge. I implore the grace of your rain of immortality. The thunder spreads through Heaven and Earth."
--RV V.63.1-2.

Good Veda chanting is also difficult to find, so thank goodness for the wonderful resource provided by astrojyoti.com - all four Vedas (http://www.astrojyoti.com/vedamp3.htm) to hear online.

Namaste Indraneela,

Thank you so much for your in-depth reply. Point of clarification: What I meant was the Sanskrit renditions, the singing of them. I am studying the language and though my teacher is not a Vedic, but a Classical Sanskrit scholar, he has enough experience to study the meanings with me. I'm sure the English translation links you sent will be of value to others, though. I have listened to the links on astrojyoti, but haven't visited there in a while. Of course, correct pronunciation is core, but some have a certain magic beyond that. I have found it, but can't seem to relocate it. I'll keep hunting.

Really like these verses

The last Sukta of Rigveda (10.191) summarizes the whole essence of what humans should do to imbibe the Vedas. The entire Vedas have to be understood in context of this Sukta which emphasizes on the most differentiating trait of human beings – unity – in purpose, method and approach. Here is a summary list of the dictates of Vedic religion in this Sukta:
Rigveda 10.191.2
- walk together in the path of truth without bias, injustice and intolerance
- talk to each other to enhance knowledge, wisdom and affection without malice and hatred
- keep working together to enhance knowledge and bliss
- follow the path of truth and selflessness as exemplified by noble people
Rigveda 10.191.3
- Your analysis of right and wrong should be unbiased and not specific to particular set of people
- You should organize together to help everyone enhance their health, knowledge and prosperity
- Your minds should be devoid of hatred and should see progress and happiness of all as one’s own progress and happiness and you should only act for enhancement of happiness of all based on truth
- Work together to eradicate falsehood and discover truth
- Never ever deviate from path of truth and unity
Rigveda 10.191.4
- Your efforts should be full of enthusiasm and for bliss of everyone
- Your emotions should be for one and all and love everyone the way you love yourself
- Your desire, resolve, analysis, faith, abstinence, patience, keenness, focus, comfort etc all should be towards truth and bliss for all, and away from falsehood.
- Keep working in synergy to increase each others’ knowledge and bliss.

I have this one as a sticky note on my desktop. Its short but so deep and complex. A good reminder.

"One should, perform karma with nonchalance
without expecting the benefits because
sooner of later one shall definitely get the fruits. ”
