I was searching about female Hindu purohits and I found an article:
http://www.womensradio.com/articles/Indian-City-Opens-Doorway-to-Female-Hindu-Priests/2246.html

What do you think? I was always courting the idea but thought it would be nearly impossible for a westerner like me. I am planning to study Hindi in college in the meantime, but I still have (probably unrealistic) fanciful thoughts about this.

Thats a beautiful newsarticle you linked to Daniella. :) Pune, is in the western part of the country and is one of the more progressive/cosmopolitan places in India.

It is great to have Hindus embrace female priests. Hopefully it becomes more prevalent in other parts of the country too.

As regards your studying Hindi, keep in mind that most of the mantras are in Sanskrit. Although Hindi and Sanskrit share the same script (Devanagari script), it doesnt follow that if one knows Hindi, you can automatically read and understand Sanskrit.

So, if you really want to do take up study of Hindi. But I am afraid it is a bit fanciful to imagine you would be able to understand and recite Sanskrit mantras after knowing Hindi.

At 18, the world is your oyster.
Kick the self doubting thoughts out of your mind and follow your dreams.

I believe the issue of female priests and learning Hindi/Sanskrit in India was discussed before in the forum (by ???). But the link in your post provides additional info.

Pranam.

Namasté, all,

The question has indeed been raised in two prior threads, here (http://www.hindudharmaforums.com/showthread.php?t=7405) and here (http://www.hindudharmaforums.com/showthread.php?t=8164).

I agree with Believer completely. The wish to be a priest is a noble one; there is every reason to pursue it. :)
