Jai Ganesh

Be more specific, many of us would have read Srimad Bhagvat but the 18 volume one, could it be with commentary by an Acharya?

Thanks Orlando :). I checked it out. You're right. The translation in the site I posted is not Swami Prabhupada's, but is based on Swami Prabhupada's translation.

I just bought Eknath's copy of the Bhagavad Gita. Is it a good translation?

I have not read his translation, but Eknath is a Gandhian Universalist, so I suppose it's not a very traditional interpretation of the Bhagavad Gita.

Gandhian universalist? What is that exactly?

I've already own the Prabhupada one, it's a great collection, I haven't read much by myself but a lot through several classes since 2003 and through a Bhagavat-Saptaha (the most amazing event I've ever participated).

I'd like to receive some recommendations of other Bhagavatam commentaries. Is there a Bhagavatam with Shaiva commentaries, preferrably form Kashmir Shaivism?

Namaste,

I have a 2 volume BhAgvat from Gita Press, Gorakhpur. It is the MarAthi edition however. They must have English and they definitely have hindi and gujrathi.

I like it. It has
- BhAgvat Aarti,
- BhAgvat MahAtmya (glories of) just like we have Gita MahAtmya,
- pArAyaN methods (how to read bhAgvat ritualistically) and
- each canto-chapter as simply saNskrut verse and translation, no purports.
This is good. I find the translation quite balanced and straightforward.

What i am fascinated about is that it is all 12 cantos and the before-after in a 2 volume pack that can be carried. Each volume is 2 inches thick - only.

BhAgvat is too sacred and i would recommend reading it like this first, keeping in mind Shrila VyAsaDev's motivation behind its existence: He was not satisfied after writing all veda shrutis, brahma sUtras, purANs and even MahAbhArat, as it did not bring out the sweetness (mAdhurya) and all glories of the Supreme Lord and His Lilas in the trailokya - all three worlds, especially KRshNa lilas of Dvapar. The major life-giving nectar was missing and NArad Muni reminded him of it. That is when VyAsaDev (KRshNa DwaipAyana Veda VyAs of this manvantar) compiled the BhAgvatam.

BhAgvat is a qualifier for "of BhagavAn", and Lord BrahmA says "KRushNas tu BhagavAn svayam." (KRushNa is BhagavAn, the Supreme Lord Himself).

1. BhAgvat = literary incarnation of BhagavAn Shri Hari
2. BhAgvat = a person drenched in bhakti / devotion to BhagavAn Shri Hari.
That is why ShukaDev , son of Veda VyAs was the mahA BhAgvat who narrates the nectar about BhagavAn and thus facilitates liberation of souls from the material, while creating an attachment for BhagavAn Shri Hari. Thus, it is said that one should "hear" (shravaNam - in today's world e-shravaNam or book-shravaNam) the BhAgvat from a BhAgvat.

For those who want to read, hear and listen to (lectures on) pieces of A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami PrabhupAd's Shrimad BhAgvatam commentary online,
there is http://vedabase.net ,
Krishna.com has audio online and audio books,
Morning lectures thru' temple webcams will also be helpful - the morning bhagvatam class concentrates on one shlok and purport.
Also, old copies of PrabhupAd's BhAgvat volumes are floating around at much lower prices. Check temples too.
For a lot of related nectar there is the KRishna.com bookstore.
