Let me introduce myself first. I am Indian, 19 years and girl. I want to practice Brahamacharya (at least for some years of my life). I don't know where to start.

One more thing. Please don't give me that Brahamacharya is not for girls because I am mature (or learned) enough to decide that for myself.

Next, I get disturbed a lot (of course attraction is a major part of it) but otherwise as well. Especially when people pass on statements that doubt my talent and potential. I become angry and irritated (forgetting that their comments do not really matter). I am basically very passionate for some reason (and I like it a lot). I hate with passion, I love with passion, I get angry with passion... Basically I think something like this can actually very negatively effect my health (and not that it hasn't already). I know that it cannot really be suppressed and nor do I wish to. But I want to divert it into my academics and my writing (I want to be a novelist) and rest to control through Brahamcharya. There is just one thing I know is that I cannot be distracted (or become lazy), no matter what..!! Because this is the most crucial time of my life.

Please suggest some simple and effective techniques (because I am very busy throughout the day). And yes, some tips to get over laziness and how to get up early will also help.

Vannakkam Eriko: Good to see you posting. Here's a link to a booklet on it.

I'm sure you will find some useful thoughts and tools in it.

Namaste Eriko,

I appreciate your interest.

I suggest a good foundation of Hinduism basically the 4 stages of life and what is the goal for a Hindu. The book Vedanta Treatise by Swami Parthasarathy is a good beginners book. "Inner freedom" tapes by Swami Tadatmananda, a white American, will also be very interesting

http://www.arshabodha.org/tapes.html

Also try to see if there are youth Hindu groups and whether they offer talks/discussions on issues from a Hindu point of view (not just socializing. This forum has many posters who give great links on many of these aspects including managing the mind.

Namaste,

But I want to divert it into my academics and my writing (I want to be a novelist) ........
To my knowledge, this would require one to do lot of reading to familiarize oneself with different writing styles, before one develops his/her own style. Some coaching from a person proficient in writing prose will be most helpful. Novels have so much description of human interactions. That would require actually experiencing human interactions with a variety of people and being very, very observant about what goes on right in front of you, in the course of the day. Making mental or written notes of these interactions/observations would be a must for creating/describing different scenarios in a novel. Rest of the issues, I don't feel qualified to make any suggestions. So, I would leave that for other members to respond to.

Pranam.

Hari Om!

As one on the path, let me encourage you to follow along, even if only for a period in your life. We are slaves to our senses and this results in much suffering as I will personally attest. As you know, brahmacharya is more than just celibacy.

My Satguru is Sant Shri Asharamji Bapu whom you are probably already familiar with. Please view his sites at www.ashram.org (http://www.ashram.org) www.hariomgroup.org (http://www.hariomgroup.org) www.hariomlive.org (http://www.hariomlive.org) and others including videos on YouTube and blogs and videos on www.speakingtree.in (http://www.speakingtree.in) His book "The Secret of Eternal Youth" may seem like it is geared more toward males, but many of the aspects apply to females and he states that females also need to practice. He has an ashram in Delhi where you can find books, CD's etc or just go for some peace and quiet. I've taken his darshan at Ahmedabad and was overwhelmed by the love that he radiates. What does all of this mean? It's helping me along the path - to quiet and still the mind, to learn to accept myself and others as true spiritual beings and so much more. You too will find this and much more, if not with Bapu, by the grace and direction of Lord Hanuman - the perfect Brahmachari!

My thoughts are with you. If I can be of assistance, feel free to PM or continue to post your thoughts here. Knowing that someone else has the desire to practice is encouraging to me and I appreciate your having reached out.

Jai Jai Hanuman!

Namaste Erico,

Yes, you are mature but still quite young for such a strong decision.

I am basically very passionate for some reason (and I like it a lot). I hate with passion, I love with passion, I get angry with passion... Basically I think something like this can actually very negatively effect my health (and not that it hasn't already). I know that it cannot really be suppressed and nor do I wish to. Calm yourself down. Focus on your objective. Join some meditation session if time allows.

Laziness and being a late riser is a matter of habit. Force yourself to follow some routine for 21 days continuously and it would create a new habit. Try it. Believe me, it works.

Hari Om!

DevoteeJi reminds us of an important point. Posted elsewhere on this site is http://www.bsk.ashram.org/Gallery/Vi...Subtitles.aspx (http://www.bsk.ashram.org/Gallery/VideoPlayer/TabId/904/SeriesID/116/Sanskar-Sinchan-English-Subtitles.aspx) - very elementary but also simple routine that most can follow if so determined. The video is just under 4 minutes in length and has english subtitles.

Please review the other threads related to brahmacharya on the forums - you will find some great information from some very learned and wise souls there.

Also, the book that I mentioned above can be downloaded from: http://brahmacharya-celibacy5.blogspot.com/
