What was so good about this movie that it is being nominated for oscars?

I don't understand why the west focuses so much on india's issues and not concentrate on their own.

I have seen this movie several times now and first of all, the quotes provided from the manu smriti are wrong! secondly, though the movie tackles a very sensitive issue of widows in india in the 1930s what does that have to do with today's world?

Doesn't 'Babul' of Amitabh portray a more current version of the indian thought on this issue? (I haven't seen babul yet but heard about the story)

As usual, I am shocked to see this propaganda about bharat, its people and our culture.

I guess as long as one concentrates on other people's issues and misery one feels good no matter how many issues and miseries might be in one's own backyard.

namaste MG,
I agree, however, in this case, in this particular movie, at the start of it, it gives some quotes from manu smriti...quotes translates to something completely wrong and sets the viewer for the 'here we go, those indians, this is how they treat their women'.

I don't understand why this movie is being nominated for oscars!

You know what I just realized the silliness of all this. I remember how vatican went up and down in arms about the da vinci code movie and novel. It was silly to see.

Hope you enjoyed my silliness!
anything controversial, okay, you are up for oscars...
