If it's just 4 feet then I can't even think any probable reason why it wasn't found earlier. We don't and can't understand what's going on HIS mind.

Calculate the human effort required if have to fill 9 or 10 feet seamlessly for few kilometers. But HE does it in style and when he thought it should be revealed he took the dreams route.
