Parva?
Namaste all!
Does anyone know the meaning of parva? I know in Mahabharata there are parvas like chapters..
But is it indicate some time?
Asking this because someone tell me that I have to wait for 10 parvas. And I didn't understand how much time it is?
Pranam..

we look at parva as parvan ... a very useful word as it has multiple meanings.
Parvan can mean ( and is defined as) a knot or a joint, also a limb. So we can see its application as it is also defined
as a division ( as in a book, chapters) like a break , pause or section.
Since it is a ~ division~ then using it to mean a period of time is also possible. So here is where it gets sticky,
note the following definitions offered for time:
- a half-month (24 in a year)
- the day of the moon's passing the node at its opposition or conjunction
- the days of the 4 changes of the moon (i.e. the full and change of the moon and the 8th and 14th of each half-month)
- the moment of the sun's entering a new sign ( this is rarely used in jyotish)
- a moment , instant
So, parvan as a knot can also be called kanda and this term is used for various sections of books.
Now some may argue/offer parvaṇa as another term. This is possible but not the same definitions are applied.
