Ok big step for me, I have enrolled for singing lessons today. I will have to explain to my coach that If we are to do scales, I may need to change the mode from the major, as it doesn't really resonate for me.
I must investigate as to the mode on which Indian music is based, I do love the Arabic mode as well.
Can any kind soul recommend any reading or places for insight into this? I am unsure as to just how different our musical traditions are.

Sama in Sanskrit means one which is melodious and any vidya or knowledge which deals with melody can actually be considered as Sama Veda. As Sri Krishna says in Bhagavad Gita, He is the Sama Veda amongst all Vedas, which actually shows the prominence of music.Sri Saraswathi is considered as the origin of both knowledge and music and hence, praying to Her before starting will surely help you in this beautiful journey.

Today's Indian classical music can be categorised into two broad sections
- Carnatic
- Hindustani

Carnatic classical music has its roots purely from the Sama Veda, although exact details are missing as of today.This music is widely popular in the Southern part of India

Hindustani classical has a rich blend of Persian and middle east style along with some fundamental rules taken from Sama Veda. This music is widely popular in the Northern part of India

Both forms of music are quite a science and hence in order to learn them one may require a good Guru....
Its extremely easy to get lost in the huge world of Indian classical music, unless one does not understand it correctly

The Raga and Tala system form the backbone and the Swara and Shruthi form the limbs of Indian music....
Most of the songs are dedicated to one or other Gods or Goddesses. One can find songs in various Indian languages like Sanskrit, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam under Carnatic and Hindi,Marathi,Bengali etc under Hindustani.
