    Dussehra report from the capital

    Namaste,

    Happy Dussehra to all.

As is the tradition in North India, Ramlila was enacted at quite a few places in the capital in the days leading up to dashami. On the tenth day following the Ashwin Amavasya, or on dashami, many parks in Delhi set up effigies of Ravan, Megnath and Kumbhakaran. Some even went to the trouble of setting up a mock Lanka around the effigies. In the evening, during the final act of Ramlila, Lord Hanuman burnt down the mock city of Lanka, which is loaded with fireworks. That was followed by Bhagwan Ram shooting arrows to start the fires in the effigies. The best and most thunderous fireworks had been saved for the effigies. Once on fire, it was quite spectacular to watch the fireworks going off from different areas as the effigies burnt.

On the Dussehra eve mother nature played havoc with weather. Around 3 PM, there was heavy rain accompanied with strong gusts. Some areas of the capital even experienced some hail. This damaged many effigies which had already been installed. At some places even the heads came off and fell on the ground because of the wind gusts. But, they were able to put everything back together today and load the effigies with fireworks in time for the shows in different parks.

    Pranam.

    Namaste Believer

Thank you for sharing this update!
    Happy Dussehra!
Lanka is burning, they lit the end of Lord Hanuman's tail and so Hanuman set all of Lanka ablaze with His holy tail! Jai Lord Hanuman, Jai Sita Ram!

Lanka is burning. Just see the flames licking the horizon. See the shadow of Hanuman cast upon the twilight and over the smoke and flames.

    Thanks for sharing Believer.

It's nice to know that the Ramlila is the favoured play in the north during Dussehra. In some temples here, it would be the enactment of Durga slaying the buffalo-demon Mahishasura.

    Happy Dussehra!

    Namaste Equinox,

In India, the Bengali community celebrates Durga Puja. In Delhi, they set up huge tents - pandaals - with an alter for Durga Ma. There is worship for 8 days and on the ninth morning, which is the day before Dussehra, they perform visarjan - taking the deity to a nearby river/ocean and immersing it in the flowing waters. I am not sure if there is a reenactment of any events related to Durga Ma. Before they leave the pandal for visarjan, there is the applying of red powder on each other's face; something like we Northerners do on Holi. This year a hundred trucks lined up at the Yamuna river for the immersion of 3000 idols that they had brought in from various celebration venues. In Kolkotta, everything comes to a standstill for about 10 days for Durga puja. I am sure someone will fill in and also correct me on the missing details.

    Pranam.
