Re: Indra Shrine Bangkok
Namasté,
Thank you so much for this post, ShivaFan. A temple of Indra is indeed a terribly rare find, and this serene murti of him is so entrancing.
A nice brochure about the shrines is provided here, and you may see the whole area in this video (Indra's image appears around 2:45).
To Thai devotees Indra indeed looks after mankind; he is intimately concerned with the troubles of all people. His thousand eyes watch over everyone, and if there are difficulties, it is said that his soft seat becomes hard, and he will instantly move and see to the problem.
He is depicted at Bangkok City Hall, appears on Bangkok's city seal, and is part of Bangkok's official name, a very long titulary that translates as The city of angels, the great city, the eternal jewel city, the impregnable city of Indra, the grand capital of the world endowed with nine precious gems, the happy city, abounding in an enormous royal palace that resembles the heavenly abode where reigns the reincarnated god, a city given by Indra and built by Vishvakarma.
If you return to Bangkok, do please visit the shrine.
