Brihat Samhita by Varahamihira

Today I was given as a gift a two volume edition of Varahamihira's Brihat Sanghita (Samhita) as it has a wonderful chapter on the wagtail bird (Khanjana) of which I am writing an article for my "Wonders of India" project.

This is the edition from Mothilal Banarsidass Publishers Private Limited, printed in Delhi India 2nd Edition, with translation by M. Ramakrishna Bhat.

There is a lot of interesting information about wildlife and nature of India in this book, authored about 500 AD. But mostly it is about Jyotish astronomy and astrology, asterisms and other amazing things.

What do you think about Varahamihira's? Is this authority a good reference?

Varāhamihira-ji or as many call him varāhamihirāchara was considered one of the nine gems of the court of ujjain, under vikramāditya raj's rule. If this is true then this was the 1st centrury; yet many see his where-abouts on this earth around 507 A.D.


All serious jyotiṣa's respect and study his work... none can be finer.
