śiva is also known as śambhu
We know that śiva is rooted in śī defined as 'in whom all things lie' - every, anything and no-thing rests within śiva ,
more specifically maheśvaraḥ we know as the Supreme or pārama-īśvaram.
Yet too this word śiva is defined as auspicious , propitious , gracious , favourable , benign , kind , benevolent , friendly which
comes from śiva ; this 'va' is defined as auspicious, and also a dwelling.
So what of śambhu ? On the surface śambhu is defined as being or 'existing for happiness or welfare , granting or causing happiness'.
We can see how one ( śambhu) can be applied to the other (śiva).
Yet if we take this word as śam+ bhu We get a better look at the value offered.
śam = to put an end , to extinguish; finish , stop , come to an end , rest ; be calm, satisfied or contented
bhu = bhū = to mingle , mix ; to be transformed into ; earth (as a substance) , ground , soil , land ; to come into existence
Hence one view we can offer of śambhu is that Supreme Being that brings to rest our continued ( birth-after-birth)
coming into existence; it is the Supreme that that brings śam or contentment, that offers the dwelling (va) of lying (śī)
in his grace.
If we look at a statue of nataraj Who does he have his foot on ? A small person some call apasmāra. This has multiple meanings:
It is śambhu (nataraj) that brings an end to all of this.
- the human condition
- birth
- ignorance or confusion of mind

Namaste, yajvan.
You are asking me to recall my Sanskrit and what I remember about this now (which isn't much). AFAIK:
The bij "Sham' represents a state of peace or happiness.
The bij 'Bho' is a form of salutation and/or respect.
In essence it means 'saluting the joy'...'saying 'hi' to peace'...something like that.
In the sense of it applying to Mahadeva, Shambho is the indwelling spirit or Jivatman. So we are 'saluting the joy that is the Jivatman' by worshipping Shiva Shambho.
That's all I know.
Aum Namah Shivaya

Namaste Yajvan and Necro,
In my opinion :
Shambhu = Sham + Bhu ===> Happiness + happen, originate ===> That who is the source of happiness.
