    For those that look up...

2013 is suppose to be an outstanding year. The one item that is of great interest to me is C/2012 S1 , or a comet. Its about 615 million miles from us or between Saturn and Jupiter.

What's the big deal ? It's brightness say the experts ~ should be ~ outstanding. "If it lives up to expectations, this comet may be one of the brightest in history."

    Its arrival ?
6.2 million miles from mars around the 1st of October, then in our neibhorhood in November and december. Closest to us around the 26th of December.
By late November it will be visible to the unaided eye just after dark in the same direction as the setting Sun.

Its tail could stretch like a searchlight into the sky above the horizon. Then it will swing rapidly around the Sun, passing within two million miles of it, far closer than any planet ever does, to emerge visible in the evening sky heading northward towards the pole star.

Will we be able to see this comet from California?

Do you think this is a "marker" of sorts, and will jyotish practioners interpret this as having special meaning?

Yes, this comet should be visiable in California.
Do I think the comet is a marker ? I think not, but that is just my opinion.

Yajvan, I see ancient astrologers used the comets to make predictions on the events of the Mahabharata.

Does Jyotisha understand all comets to be omens or it depends on how they manifest themselves in the current sky?

A very good question... one I am not capiable of answering with specific śāstric references. I do have opinions, but those are valued little.
