    one's intellectual interests

Where does one put their attention ? Where does one's attention naturally gravitate to ? By example, say it is raining. Where does the water naturally flow as it gathers ? There is simple laws that guide the water to places of collection, to lower spots, to pools, etc. Like that, where does the mind/intent/attention naturally flow to ? Jyotish suggests the following.

We are taught that viṣṇu resides over the cornerstones of one's chart ( janma-kuṇḍalī). We know these to be 4 or pūruṣārthara known as the four aims of existence or human pursuit : kāma ,artha , dharma , mokṣa.
These 4 (āya¹) align to the 4 corners or kendra-s of the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th houses.
We can look at these 4 in multiple ways, but lets just focus on the 1st (lagna) for now as it is the location of many things, including intelligence (dhī śakti).

Now we look to the degreeº of the lagna and see what pada this lagna resides in. We know there are 4 pada to each nakṣatra¹.
If the lagna degree resides in:

    • the 1st pada , then the intellect is directed to dharma
    • the 2nd pada, then the intellect is directed to artha
    • the 3rd pada, then the intellect is directed to kāma
    • the 4th pada, then the intellect is directed to mokṣa
We can see then via one's chart where one's attention naturally gravitates to and the influence in one's choices in life.

Yet there is more to the story as you would imagine. Where now does the lord of the lagna reside? This position or location is called the pāka¹ lagna. This then informs us on the strength of intelligence. Note it is possible that the pāka lagna and lagna can be one and the same.
We then go on to evaluate the influnces from other graha's on the lord of the lagna and pāka lagna.

All begin to paint a picture of one's natural leanings , and strength of intelligence and resolve.

    • āya means 4, but also means gain, profit, arrival , approach
    • Some also see this arrival as āyana meaning coming or approaching and one can use it to suggest
the goal (gain) one wishes to approach.

    • nakṣatra - a constellation through which the moon passes some call a lunar mansion .
    • pāka means ripening, development of consequences , result.
