    kālasarpa yoga

I thought to offer a few data points on this kālasarpa yoga. It is one of those things that people 'seem to know' when
entering into jyotiṣh, just as 'karma' is known when one ~seems~ to align themselves to sanātana dharma.

    Starting with words and definitions

    kālasarpa yoga

    kala =
    • weak , crude , undigested
    • (in poetry) time equal to four mātra-s or instants some say 4 pause/beats
    kalā =
    • a division of time
    • a term for the seven substrata of the elements or dhātus of the human body i.e. flesh , blood , fat , phlegm , urine , bile , and semen
    • an embryo shortly after conception
    • (with the pāśupata-s) the elements of the gross or material world
    • 1/16th of the the moons diameter; or a digit
    kālā =
    • black , of a dark color , dark-blue
    • A name for durgā
    • of a nāga-rāja
    kāla =
    • black , of a dark color , dark-blue
    • the poisonous serpent or nāga called kālasarpa
    sarpa =
    • creeping , crawling , stealing along
    • a snake , serpent ; yet some do differ on the notion of snake verses serpent. That is, a serpent with a human face yet serpent-like lower extremities. Sarpa also means tortuous motion.
    Within one's rāśi chart

If there are 12 bhāva-s ( houses) there must then be 12 forms of kalā sarpa yoga. I will list them out , but first let's get a better definition of this kālasarpa yog.

In general, it is when all graha-s are hemmed in between to the two nodes rāhu and ketu. Yet there are riders to this rule that brings better clarity:
    • All graha-s¹ and the lagna¹ must be between the two nodes.
    • rāhu must be leading - that is heading towards all the other graha-s ; this is always in a counter-clockwise direction.
Some call this direction 'a-paśavya' or not traveling with the herd ; 'herd' here is the other graha-s that move clock-wise
      or sun-wise.
      • Even if one graha is outside this hem ( some call rāhu - ketu axis) this kalāsarpa yog does not apply. Same with the lagna being outside this axis.
    • If say ketu is leading, this too does not apply and is considered kāla amṛta-yoga or a beneficial yoga. It is when all the graha-s that lie between rāhu & ketu move toward ketu instead of rahu; Now why would I say this ? Because all the graha-s are heading to ketu, the natural mokṣa-kāraka.
    • According to jyotiṣa BV Raman, he advises that:
      • this kālasarpa only occurs when rāhu occupies one of the 1st 6 houses (bhāva-s 1,2,3,4,5 and 6).
      • and that no one single yoga is capable of marring or making a horoscope.
It is my opinion that the rāhu and ketu axis is a view and influence on mundane life; and ketu-rāhu axis has its greatest influence on spiritual matters.

What is this kālasarpa yoga influence on the native ? This kālasarpa is considered kaṇṭaka - a thorn anything pointed , the point of a pin or needle , a prickle , sting , in one's chart. But this is not always the case as we will see in some of the discussions later on.

Note too that we will not find these kālasarpa yoga-s in the brihat-parāśara-horā-śāstra authored by the seer mahāṛṣi parāśar and other classics. It is ~fairly new~. Yet we will find sarpa yoga¹ called out in the classics from varāha-mihira ācārya and others. We will leave this alone for now.

First let's list out the 12
    1. ananta kālasarpa yoga - note ananta is 'endless' ; it is a name of śeṣa or his brother vāsuki. See the connection to sarpa ? Some spell anant kālasarpa yoga.

    2. kulika kālasarpa yoga - kulika = one of the nine chiefs of the nāga-s or serpent-race ; this word is defined as the chief or head man of a guild but also a thorny plant; Thorns as in ' kaṇṭaka - a thorn anything pointed ' called out above. Again see the connection to sarpa ?

    3. vāsuki kālasarpa yoga - vāsuki = one of the three kings of the nāga-s , the other two being śeṣa and takṣaka ; vāsuki was used as a rope for twisting round the mountain mandara when they churned the ocean of milk if you recall.

    4. saṃkāpal kālasarpa yoga - saṃkā = contest, strife, fight + pala = time . Another from the nāga clan.

    5. padma kālasarpa yoga - padma = lotus-hued , being of the colur of a lotus ; female nāga called manasā , wife of the sage jaratkāru
padma can also be a high number within 1000 millions or billions.

    6. mahapadma kālasarpa yoga - maha is great + padma - just forementioned above.

    7. takṣaka kālasarpa yoga - takṣaka = one of the three kings of the nāga-s , the other two being śeṣa and vāsuki.Takṣaka means 'a cutter' and can be used for a carpenter of sorts. It then should be able to be used for a stone cutter also. Yet this word can be used as the sūtra-dhāra or speaker in the prelude of a drama ( drama in one's life perhaps ?)

    8. karkoṭaka kālasarpa yoga - karka = white, excellent; it too is the name of cancer (karkaṭa), the natural 4th house which is 'excellent'.
This karkoṭaka is the name of sugar cane yet one will find another definition as a spiny bitter gourd. Once again this karkoṭaka is of the nāgavaṃśī or lineage , race , family (vaṃśī) of the nāga-s.

    9. saṃkānāda kālasarpa yoga - saṃkā= contest, stife, fight + nāda = roaring , crying.

    10. pātaka kālasarpa yoga - pātaka = that which causes to fall or sink . Some call this ghātaka kālasarpa yoga . This word ghātaka = killing , ruining.

    11. viṣadhara kālasarpa yoga - viṣa = poison, venom + dhara = holding , bearing , carrying , wearing , possessing. Some call this viṣakat kālasarpa yoga; viṣa (as forementioned) + kat = kad = kill or hurt , confound, to cry or shed tears.

    12. śeṣa-nāga kālasarpa yoga - śeṣa = the thousand-headed serpent regarded as the emblem of eternity called ananta ' the infinite' ; in the viṣṇu-purāṇa he and the serpents vāsuki and takṣaka are described as sons of kadru , but in one place śeṣa alone is called king of the nāga-s inhabiting pātāla.

    iti śiva

    words
    • sarpa yoga - malefics are in quadrants when calculated from lagna; some too add the calculation from the ārūḍha lagna.
      • This yoga is called out in the nābhasa yoga section of brihat-parāśara-horā-śāstra ( chapter 37) and is categorized as dala yoga
      • 4 classes of yoga-s are considered: āśraya, dala , ākṛti and saṃkhyā yoga-s .
    • lagna ( some write lagnam) - sounds like lugna; this means adhering or clinging to , attached to , sticking or remaining in , fixed on , intent.
      • It is the rising sign / point on the horizion in degeesº at the time of one's birth.
      • Say one is born at 6 AM on July 1st , 1950 - at that moment
13º26'14" of the constellation Aries was on horizon i.e. rising, at that time; it 'clinged' to the horizon at that time.
    • grāhaka - one who seizes or takes captive

If you look at the list in post 1 above ( list 1 to 12) the kālasarpa yoga-s start with house 1 and go to house 12. That is, the 1st kālasarpa yoga listed is ananta kālasarpa yoga. This then suggests that rāhu is in the 1st bhāva and ketu is in the 7th ( or 180º away) house. The next one is
kulika kālasarpa yoga, which means rāhu is in the 2nd bhāva and ketu is in the 8th house. Like that, this is how to read the list.

Now to the jyotiṣa these positions will indicate the results that can be expected... as to their timing of events , this is a matter of working with the proper daśā¹ system.

    Re: kālasarpa yoga

    Namaste Yajvan ji

kAlsarpa yoga is so confusing. I think 90% of scripture/texts connected to Hinduism is so. Personal opinion only.

It is said, on one hand, "this kālasarpa only occurs when rāhu occupies one of the 1st 6 houses ", and on the other hand, śeṣa-nāga kālasarpa yoga is when Ketu is in 6th and Rahu is in 12th.

I think that you remember that I am blessed with partial śeṣa-nāga kālasarpa yoga with Sun conjunct Ketu in 5-6 houses and Moon conjunct Rahu in 11-12 houses. So, it is double dose: Grahan kAlsarpa yoga. A very beautiful combination indeed.

Some, of course, will call it kAlamrita yoga. But in the matter of inflicting pain both these types are equal, IMO.

    Regards
That which is without letters (parts) is the Fourth, beyond apprehension through ordinary means, the cessation of the phenomenal world, the auspicious and the non-dual. Thus Om is certainly the Self. He who knows thus enters the Self by the Self.
