    Japa Mala

    Namaste,
I am under the impression that you should have a separate mala for each mantra? is that true?

Where does this understanding/information come from ? The source ?

    Note too the following:

mala = dirt , filth , dust , impurity . A blemish within the human condition
mālā = a garland as in a 'garland' of beads.

How can you write this if you cannot find 'ā' on your keyboard ? We write it like this: mAlA.

I don't remember where i heard it...... i heard something about them gaining power related to the mantra the more you do the same mantra on the mAlA so it seemed as if you would need a separate one for each if you were going to practice several mantras at the same time... was that just a sales gimmick to get me to buy more mAlAs?

may i also write the "ā" as aa? or is that different?

this is correct, will also work fine :
    write the "ā" as aa?
There is a saying, we only dig one well at a time to hit water. This is the reasoning behind one mantra or chant. We stay with it ... we do not go from here to there. This is exactly what the mind would care to do. To go window shopping from mantra to mantra. We stay with one till we see results. Then one can consider other approaches.

A father may have many children that run here and there... some are calm, some are in mischief. Yet he has them all under one roof.

One needs to find the proper house ( mantra) that will bring all of the children ( issues, problems) in to harmony under one's roof ( one's mind and intellect).

It is not by more mantras, it is by the proper ones at the proper time.

Vannakam: According to that site, you are supposed to pull each bead toward you, and I was taught to lightly push each bead away from you. So go figure. Yajvan has given great advice.

    Namaste,

The general idea of undertaking specific "mantras" for many different problems that one is facing is more associated with Neopaganism than Hinduism. There are different Hindu prayers/stotras for different occasions and circumstances, but mantras are usually for one's general sadhana and meditation rather than fulfilling temporary needs.
